The education differences effected the way of learning for the colored. According to one of the education Jim Crow Laws, "The schools for white children and the schools for negro children shall be conducted separately." The African Americans had run down schools. In these classes, focusing was harder than being in a white school, because of the environment. A black school was inferior to the white schools.
Blacks were allowed to go into libraries, but only certain areas. A Jim Crow Law states that, "The state librarian is directed to fit up and maintain a separate place for the use of the colored people who may come to the library for the purpose of reading books or periodicals." This meant the colored were given less options (opportunities) for reading and increasing their knowledge. Being in separate areas divided these two races in a very bad way.
In 1929 when Herbert Hover was the President of the United States, the first day of the Great Depression began. Many factors caused the depression. This included bank failures, droughts, and the stock market crash in 1929. Banks closed and employment decreased dramatically. Being African American during the Great Depression was very tough. The setting of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was during this time, after the Civil War. The Logans lived in the south where black people were treated unfairly. Selling goods and making a living was difficult for the Logans because most white people thought they were better than them.
