Jim Crow Laws

Education

The education differences effected the way of learning for the colored. According to one of the education Jim Crow Laws, "The schools for white children and the schools for negro children shall be conducted separately." The African Americans had run down schools. In these classes, focusing was harder than being in a white school, because of the environment. A black school was inferior to the white schools.

Libraries

Blacks were allowed to go into libraries, but only certain areas. A Jim Crow Law states that, "The state librarian is directed to fit up and maintain a separate place for the use of the colored people who may come to the library for the purpose of reading books or periodicals." This meant the colored were given less options (opportunities) for reading and increasing their knowledge. Being in separate areas divided these two races in a very bad way.

Great Depression

In 1929 when Herbert Hover was the President of the United States, the first day of the Great Depression began. Many factors caused the depression. This included bank failures, droughts, and the stock market crash in 1929. Banks closed and employment decreased dramatically. Being African American during the Great Depression was very tough. The setting of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was during this time, after the Civil War. The Logans lived in the south where black people were treated unfairly. Selling goods and making a living was difficult for the Logans because most white people thought they were better than them.

These photos of the Great Depression show people that lived in Hoovervilles, an article of Black Friday, houses in the Dust Bowl, soup kitchen lines, and a bank that closed down because of the stock market crash.

Abolishment of slavery

On December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States. This was after the Civil War had ended on May 9, 1865. As President Lincoln had said in his Emancipation Proclamation, "all persons held as slaves within any State in rebellion against the United States, shall be forever free. . ." Since that day African Americans and other slaves had freedom. In the novel, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, the Logans still struggled with discrimination of their colored skin. As said in the book, “all the other slaves were freed, people continued to think that way.” (Taylor 293) The novel took place nearly seventy years after slavery ended. This was a major conflict between African Americans and whites that believed in slavery.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

Lynching

Lynching is the process of punishing someone for a crime. The punishment is held without a fair trial. During the Jim Crow time, lynching was common. Usually lynching was done by hanging the one that committed the crime. In the novel, Roll of The Thunder Hear My Cry, TJ was going to be lynched for being accused of stealing a pistol and killing Mr. Barnett. Also, Mr. Berry was lynched. The Wallaces “Poured the blackest tar they could find all over him, then plastered him with chicken feathers.”
