Yankee Doodle Fair returned: a success Elle Vail '23

After over two years of waiting, the Yankee Doodle Fair made an appearance in Westport from September 23-26. Your festival favorites, like candy apples, popcorn, cotton candy, and "Rockstar," "Zero Gravity" and "Wacky Shack", allowed us all to reminisce over the summer days we just left. With the daunting fact that the last time we could climb the "Super Slide" was a pre-COVID world, the Yankee Doodle Fair was a nice reminder of past normalcy somewhat returning. The attendees of the Yankee Doodle Fair reached a record high this year with 45 minute lines for a multitide of rides. The ticket booth was bustling, with perfect weather, the energy was high. Everyone seemed excited to visit their local fair. (Photo by Elle Vail '23)
A favorite of the Fair, the "Snack Shack," provided snow cones, caramel apples and lemonade. The classic snacks reminded some adult fair-goers of childhood. (Photo by Elle Vail '23)
Among the attractions for younger kids who weren't quite ready for the thrills of "The Cobra" roller coaster, was a band. Located closest to the Westport Women's Club (the fair is a fundraiser for this organization), the School of Rock band provided tunes all day long. (Photo by Elle Vail '23)
Per usual, the Yankee Doodle Fair games were a hit, testing customers for their will to persist and gamble. (Photos by Elle Vail '23)
The Yankee Doodle Fair returned with new rides such as "Hang Gliders" (far left. and right) and "Crazy Cars." As a result, these, worthily, had the longest lines. The hang gliders send you up about as high as the ferris wheel with the "Crazy Cars" spinning one into a dizzy whirlwind. (Photos by Elle Vail '23)

The Yankee Doodle Fair is one of the pillars of our community which brings us together and which we missed amidst COVID. In continuing with this event this year, hope was provided in addition to a fun end-of-summer experience. (Photo by Elle Vail '23)
