道 Taoism 道 TEACHING OF The way

Laozi the "Old Master", was a ancient Chinese writer and philosopher who lived from 604BC to 531BC and teachings make up the entire basis of the Tao religion. He is also regarded as the religions first deity.

While some Taoist believe in gods, traditional they do not. They mainly believe in three main things:

  • Yin Yang
  • Wu Wei
  • The Tao

In Taoism, there is further meaning of the yin-yang symbol. When the symbol is surround by 8 sets of three lines of varying length, it is then called a tajitu ba gua.

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. When I let go of what I have, I recieve what I need."

Wu Wei

  • means literally " not doing"
  • is the philosophical concept of allowing nature to take its course with no interference.

The Tao

(pronounced "dao") means literally "the path" or "the way." It is a universal principle that underlies everything from the creation of galaxies to the interaction of human beings. The workings of Tao are vast and often beyond human logic. In order to understand Tao, reasoning alone will not suffice. One must also apply intuition.

Sacred Texts

Pronounced "Dao de Ching"is a book of 81 short chapters originally written in chinese completely by Lao Tzu. It was the only basis for Taoism for centuries until the Chuang Tzu was written.
Zhuangzi came long after Lou Tzu did and he took the Taoist position and further developed it earning himself the name Chuang Tzu, aka Master Chuang. The book above is named after him but many philosophers attributed to its 33 chapters.

Taoism Worldwide

Taoism is virtually non existent outside of china and it most prominent in the southeast of that country. 30% of China's people identify as Taoist.

Taoism in Martial Arts

Martial arts that have taoist influence include : T'ai Chi Ch'uan, Bagua Zhang, Wing Chun, Won Yuen Yat Hey Jueng, Bak Mei Pai, Bok Fou Pai, Yaw Gong Moon, and Xing Yi Quan.

Religious Institutes

Today there are entire societies, reserves, institutes and schools all centered around the taoist religion.

Taoism is Also very Prominent in MAny movies and Shows today.
