What is Hemophilia? Hemophilia is a medical condition in which the ability of blood to clot is severely reduced causing one to bleed uncontrollably internally or externally. It occurs after one getting an injury.
How is it inherited? Is it a chromosomal disorder, sex linked, or dominant/recessive? Hemophilia is inherited by an X linked in a recessive pattern. The genes associated with these conditions is located in the X chromosomes, which is one of the two sex chromosomes. It occurs when one altered copy of the gene in each cell is sufficient to c.ause the condition
What causes it? Hemophobia is caused by a genetic mutation. The mutations involves genes that code for proteins that are essential in the blood clotting process. The bleeding symptoms also arise because blood clots are impaired.
What are the symptoms? Is it lethal? The symptoms of Hemophilia are large or deep bruises, joint pain and swelling, and unexplained bleeding from cuts and wounds. Hemophilia can, in most cases, be lethal. Even if it is a minor wound, it will continue to bleed, if it is untreated it can be fatal.
How Is It Treated? Hemophilia is treated with ejections of a clotting factor or plasma. Blood contains plasma, which contains proteins, antibodies, and clotting factors.
Is there a population that is most greatly effected? The most places that are highly effected by the disease is located in the south middle section in the United States such as Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, etc.
How does this disease affect society? It affects mainly the person themselves in their life time, and not society. It can affect the person's family that carries the disease well. It doesn't really affect society in a way, but it's mostly towards the person themselves
What is the history of the disease? The pressure of the amount of bleeding in the joints and muscles made known as Hemophilia. Then in the 1960's, cryoprecipitate (solution, substance) was discovered by Dr. Judith Pool found the sludge that sunk to the bottom of thawing plasma was rich in factor VIII (blood- clotting protein).
Are there any new scientific advances used to fight the disease? Experimental methods are currently being investigated as possible breakthroughs for bleeding disorders. Researchers are trying to find a way to insert a better factor VII and factor IX genes into the cells of people who have hemophilia so blood will clot more effectively.
