Breakaway Retreat is a one-day class trip for incoming medical students. The event incorporates leadership development, team building and personal development activities.
Introduction to the Profession Week
The goal of this first week is to introduce students to the themes of professionalism and professional identity that they will encounter throughout their medical education and their time as physicians.
M1s kicked off their first days of medical school with Basic Life Support training.
Throughout the week, students learn about core issues in ethics, teamwork, communication, patient safety and quality, personal awareness and self-care.
Students experienced many different teaching approaches, from interactive lectures to small group discussions, to team-based learning, to the opportunity to interview patients and health care professionals.
Students also met many of the key faculty who will be their teachers during years to come.
Following the white coat ceremony, students recited the Declaration of Geneva, the modern-day expression of the Hippocratic Oath.
The Founders' Day Keynote address was delivered by John Csernansky, MD, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
161 members of the Class of 2021 gathered at this year’s celebration, joined by their families, faculty and second-year medical students, who presented the incoming students with their white coats.
