The Big News: Our New Library!

It's not open! Don't bring classes or send students -

YET

Welcome back everyone, hope you all had a great Thanksgiving with family and friends. The big news for the library this month is that the library is basically done as far as construction goes, but it won't be open until after Christmas. We still are waiting on a few things to be completed and some furniture, tech, and books to be set up or delivered. Then we'll be setting up the library, shelving books, creating signage and all the preparations that go into opening a new library, including training new student aides. If you have any recommendations for good student aides (8th graders), please let me and/or the counselors know! Book readers are a plus!

Here are a few photos of our new spaces. There is a larger presentation area, a computer lab, a STEAM/Makerspace lab, Ben Q's and collaborative digital work spaces and more that will be available to students and classes once we open in January. We will be implementing a digital calendar/class reservation system and student login as well. More details will be forthcoming.

New IMMS Library photographs

Most importantly, this new library is truly everyone's library - particularly our students' library. My main goal is to work with you all to create a student-centered library where everyone feels welcome and safe. Please look for a survey in the coming weeks. I'm going to see if the Library club kids (and teachers) can help develop an original IMMS student/teacher survey, but you are always welcome to share your ideas with me in person, via email, tweets, facebook or any other way you'd like. We have so many ways we can communicate with each other, like this little "Share ideas HERE" button below. Please share your ideas on the Google doc linked below, if you would like.

In closing, remember the library is closed to students, but teachers are welcome to stop by to take a look or take a break in this beautiful new facility.

Book Trailers Wakelet for December

Here's a little "Wakelet" of eBook book trailers to share with our students while they wait for their new library to open. We have over one thousand ebooks and audiobooks available 24/7 for our students to check out. Most students received a refresher course on how to check out our eBooks via Destiny Discover at the beginning of the year. There is also a Reading incentive program currently going on for our sixth graders that is opening up for 7th and 8th graders NOW. 6th graders will be invited to the Texas book bash at the high school in February. 7th and 8th grade participants will be invited to a party at the end of the year with a chance for some great prizes too

Overdue Books

Teachers, please encourage students to turn in their overdue books either to their ELA teachers or to the red drop box outside the library. The goal is to have everyone's record cleared so that they may check out books in the New Library in January. I will have my student aide start picking up books during 6th period beginning on Friday. Please remind the students that the library is not open just yet. . .
