Elinor "Elly" Tatum ’93: Publisher and Editor in Chief of the New York Amsterdam News, St. Lawrence University Trustee

Elly is publisher and editor-in-chief of the New York Amsterdam News, one of the oldest Black newspapers in the country. The paper, owned by Elly, was previously owned and operated by her father, Wilbert Tatum until his death in 2009. Elly is currently a trustee of the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, The Harriet and Esteban Vicente Foundation and the Creative Visions Foundation. She also sits of the African-American Advisory board of Master Card. And is a member of the WPO, the Women’s Forum and the Links inc.. Elly was honored by Ebony magazine as one of the top women in marketing and communications in 2001. She has also been honored by Senator Hilary Clinton's Second Annual African-American History Month Celebration in Lincoln Center in 2003, by the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding in 2003, and numerous other awards. Elly earned a BA in government from St. Lawrence in 1993, studied political science at the International Graduate School of Stockholm University, and earned an MA in journalism from New York University in 1997. She received a Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa from Metropolitan College. As an alumna, she has been a career advisor, offering internships and summer jobs to St. Lawrence students. Elly was elected a Term Trustee in 2006. She has a daughter Willa, born in 2010.

Louisa Winthrop P’19: Clinical Social Worker at YWCA Greenwich Domestic Abuse Services & Supervisor for MSW Graduates at Fordham and Columbia University, St. Lawrence University Parents Committee

• Louisa Winthrop LCSW, Clinical Supervisor for Domestic Abuse Services, has more than 20 years of experience as a clinical social worker and has worked at YWCA Greenwich Domestic Abuse Services since 2004. As well as providing clinical staff supervision, Louisa has been the field instructor and clinical supervisor for MSW graduate students from both Fordham and Columbia University for the past 10 years. Louisa facilitates and organizes monthly case conferences and clinical development presentations at the YWCA. She also provides short and long term therapy for survivors of domestic violence and trauma. Louisa also has a private practice in Stamford, CT and works with adults facing a variety of issues.
• Louisa holds a BA from Duke University and Master of Social Work from Boston University. She is a certified Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist for survivors of trauma. She has had additional training in: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT); Positive Psychology and Brief Treatment; Mindfulness and Meditation; Guided Imagery; Best Practices for Anxiety and Depression; Yoga for Anxiety and Depression.

Bailey Airoldi ’13: Graduate Student in Physician Assistant Program at Clarkson University (SLU McNair)

Bailey Airoldi graduated from St. Lawrence in 2013 with a degree in Biology and Chemistry. Bailey’s postgraduate studies took her first to Vanderbilt University, where she studied biomedical research, and then to Clarkson University, where she is currently enrolled in the Physician Assistant program. Bailey is from Enosburg Falls, Vermont but currently resides in Canton, NY. While at St. Lawrence Bailey was a member of Kappa Delta Sigma sorority, Omicron Delta Kappa, McNair Scholars, Tri Beta Biology National Honor Society, and Phi Beta Kappa. Bailey was also a biology teaching assistant, emergency medical technician on SLU EMS, student justice for the judicial board, orientation leader, and chair of the academic honor council. Bailey completed a summer research program at Dartmouth College and a summer fellowship at St. Lawrence University working with Dr. Ana Estevez.

Courtney Bish '01, M‘06: Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students, SUNY Canton

• Courtney Battista Bish, Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students at SUNY Canton, has worked at the State University of New York at Canton since 2002. Courtney began her career in Residence Life as a Residence Hall Director before serving 11 years as the Director of Residence Life. Courtney has been in her current role since 2011.
• Battista Bish has also previously served as a caseworker for adolescents at risk at a youth group home, a Migrant Education Specialist, a caseworker for pregnant/parenting teenagers, and has taught several first-year experience program courses. She maintains her professional connections through NASPA, CSPA, ASCA, ATIXA, and several SUNY organizations. Courtney additionally chairs the Behavioral Intervention Team at SUNY Canton and serves as Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
• Courtney holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Multi-Language Studies as well as a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from St. Lawrence University. Battista Bish attended the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Summer Leadership Institute at Bryn Mawr College in 2013.
• In her leisure time, Courtney enjoys hiking, camping, photography, and spending time with her family.

Jill Breit ‘86: Executive Director of Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY)

Jill Breit joined TAUNY in 1993, just before the organization opened its first public gallery in Canton. A graduate of St. Lawrence University, Jill earned her M.A. in Folk Studies at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. As Executive Director, in addition to oversight of programming, Jill is in charge of long-range planning, cultivation of funding sources, and staff development. She also continues to be involved in research and programs.

Laura Brown: Associate Professor & interim Associate Dean for the School of Education & Professional Studies, SUNY Potsdam

Laura A. Brown is an associate professor at the State University of New York in Potsdam, where she is program coordinator for Adolescence English Education and interim Associate Dean for the School of Education & Professional Studies. Laura is a member of the Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association (NEPCA), the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents, and the National Council of Teachers of English and has presented at numerous regional and national conferences. She has co-authored two books on young adult authors and their writings and recently completed another collaborative writing project on Calypso pedagogy. She is currently researching and analyzing both Ray Bradbury’s short stories and the Nancy Drew series for unique content and stylistic markers.

Kimberly Flint-Hamilton: Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, St. Lawrence University

• Kimberly Flint-Hamilton has been selected as St. Lawrence University’s first Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, effective January 3, 2017. Ms. Flint-Hamilton has most recently been a Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, where she worked for the last 17 years and was appointed by the university president to serve on its Diversity Inclusion Task Force. She brings to St. Lawrence an exceptional record of intercultural education, with experience in both academic and administrative roles.
• Ms. Flint-Hamilton launched her academic career in 1990 as a visiting instructor of history at St. Mary’s College in Indiana. A year later, she became the assistant dean of arts and letters at the University of Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters, where student academic advising was her primary responsibility. Ms. Flint-Hamilton joined Stetson University in 1999 as an assistant professor, becoming an associate professor in 2002 and full professor in 2012. She has chaired Stetson’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology from 2007-2010 and again since 2013, chaired Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and served as a coordinator for the school’s Intergroup Dialogue Institute Planning Group.

Carmen Gendebien: CXO at A Wholesome Glow

Carmen Gendebien is a Cuban immigrant who fled Cuba with her family at 2 years old and made a home in New York City in 1971. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC for many years and eventually received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland. Carmen met Blake, her husband, while living in Atlanta, GA, and they decided to move to the North Country and partner with his parents to expand their dairy farm. Carmen's passion for Esthetics and wellness drove her to open a day spa in Canton, NY six years ago called Glow Skincare and Spa. Recently her passion for all natural products has driven her to launch another business called A Wholesome Glow where she makes all the products herself. Carmen and Blake also founded the Jules of Life Foundation, a local not-for-profit organization that helps local families struggling with pediatric cancer. The Jules of Life Foundation is now launching a new website this year encompassing all cancers. It will be the main information resource for all families battling cancer in St. Lawrence County.

Susan M. Hodgson: Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety-Risk Management, Chief Compliance Officer (SLHS)

• Susan M. Hodgson serves as the Vice President of Quality, Patient Safety, and Risk Management for Canton-Potsdam Hospital and as Chief Compliance Officer for St. Lawrence Health System. She is adjunct faculty at SUNY Potsdam serving as the executive sponsor of a Health Coach Program. Ms. Hodgson serves as the Compliance Officer of the North Country Accountable Care Organization, is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). In addition, Ms. Hodgson serves as the Vice President providing oversight to Population Health, Care Transition Programs, and Patient Centered Medical Home certifications. She is a board member for the Tug Hill/ Seaway Valley Regional Planning Consortium and the St. Lawrence County Regional Leader for the Adirondack Health Institute Performing Provider System (PPS)/ Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP).
• Sue began her career at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in 2011, holding positions at different times in Physician Practice Management, Business Strategy, and as the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Sue currently provides oversight in Quality and Compliance at Canton-Potsdam Hospital and sister affiliate Gouverneur Hospital.
• Sue is a seasoned executive and has served, prior to CPH, in several Senior Leadership positions as Vice President of Quality for a Hospital System in Orange County; CNO and Chief Clinical Officer in Pennsylvania; for HANYS Services in clinical quality; and quality positions at Saratoga Hospital and Saint Peter Hospital in the NYS Capital District.
• Sue has a Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from St. Joseph’s College, and additional education in Risk Management, Compliance, and Case Management.

Emily Marquart '06, M'09: LMHC, Clinical Manager, Behavioral Health Services: Canton-Potsdam Hospital

• Emily Marquart is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and National Certified Counselor. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and her Masters of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from St. Lawrence University.
• Emily started her career in the counseling field as a School-Based Clinician at Middlebury Union High School where she spent several rewarding years providing mental health counseling services and coached the boys and girls cross country and track & field programs at the high school.
• Emily then relocated back to the North Country with her husband to start a family. During this time, Emily served as an interim mental health counselor in the Counseling Center at St. Lawrence University and also worked as a career counselor in the Career Services office at SLU.
• Following her work at SLU, Emily spent several years counseling at a community counseling practice, Counseling Services of Northern NY, PLLC. At this practice, Emily provided individual counseling, group counseling, and couples counseling.
• Emily is currently serving as Clinical Manager for Behavioral Health Services at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Emily works closely with the Director to oversee the staff and patients in the Chemical Dependency Detox and Rehab Units, as well as the Psychiatric Clinic at CPH. Emily also provides Clinical Supervision to the counselors and is a member of the Incident Stress Debriefing Team.

Katherine Penalo ’15: Graduate Student in Community Health at SUNY Potsdam (SLU CSTEP Program)

Katherine Penalo is working on her Community Health Master’s of Science degree at the State University of Potsdam, New York. Penalo is currently working on a year-long project focusing on Rape Myth Acceptance and Attitudes Among Young Adults. Penalo graduated from St. Lawrence University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Studies- Sociology. She studied abroad in Ethiopia where her scholarly work focused on women’s daily labor activities. She has interned at the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services and at the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department and is currently interning at the St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House for victims of family violence. Penalo is a certified mandated reporter for child abuse and maltreatment. She aspires to work with women and children in impoverished communities to ensure they have their basic life necessities.

Angelica Soto: Counselor/Advocate at St. Lawrence County Renewal House

Angelica M. Soto has been working as a counselor and advocate at Renewal House since June 2015. Her responsibilities include serving on the domestic violence and human trafficking task forces, assisting community members in filing for orders of protection, education, and counseling with clients. She earned her Bachelor’s from the University of Buffalo in Psychology & Community Mental Health and Master’s from the University of Buffalo in Higher Education. She previously worked as a first year program residential coordinator at St. Lawrence University and served as the advisor to the Advocates program. She directed a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues in the spring of 2015. She lives in Canton with her partner and a menagerie of animals.

Jordan Walker ‘11: Executive Director of the Jefferson County Historical Society

• WATERTOWN, N.Y., September 14, 2016 — The Jefferson County Historical Society Board of Trustees has appointed Jordan B. Walker executive director, effective September 19, 2016, board president Jill Van Hoesen announced last week.
• Ms. Walker holds a bachelor's degree in History from St. Lawrence University. She is also the Jefferson County Branch Secretary of the American Association of University Women and a member of the EMERGE Professionals Group of Northern New York.
