The Kaleidoscope Newsletter Volume 2: Issue 17 - May 19, 2020

Greetings Everyone,

I hope this message finds you well and healthy. As we wrap up another semester, one with various trials and tribulations, I want to point out that you persevered through it all. In spite of everything! I do hope that you will take the time reflect on all your accomplishments this past year while also taking a moment to celebrate those wins. Even if it is only a small gesture. I myself am guilty of not taking the time to celebrate important moments and milestones, and instead moving quickly to accomplish the next goal. I am learning though, and really trying to have those moments of reflection and reward, even if it is as simple as treating myself to my favorite dessert. I hope you will do the same. This was a tough year and you deserve a moment to celebrate making it this far.

In addition, I want to acknowledge the incredible work of Assistant Dean Rayna Truelove as she has done a fantastic job directing the Grad Scholars Program (GSP) this year. The program has grown and developed in exciting ways under her leadership and we are so grateful for her contributions. Please also join me in congratulating our first GSP Fellow, Courtney DelPo, a second year graduate student in Chemistry who will now create and support programming for the GSP program. We are delighted to have her as part of the ADI family and excited about all the wonderful ideas that she will bring to GSP.

Have a wonderful and productive week!

All the best, Dean Miller

The P3 application is NOW open!

The Prospective Ph.D. Preview (P3) is a visitation program designed for prospective students to gather information on graduate education at Princeton University. This event is open to any interested students however, we highly encourage participation from first generation/low income students and historically underrepresented groups (which include African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans) given the disparity in graduate education across the country.

Want to get involved? Email us at p3@princeton.edu.

Perfectionism in the Time of COVID-19: A Supportive Conversation

Friday, May 22nd

4:00 - 5:00pm

The “enemy of the good,” according to Voltaire, perfectionism is a behavioral pattern frequently attributed to graduate students. During this current pandemic crisis, however, its effects may be even more keenly felt. What new pressures to excel might we place on ourselves in the current moment? How can we respond? In this supportive conversation, we’ll unpack “perfectionism” and explore some of its roots and consequences, before turning to reflect on how we relate to it now. We’ll conclude by thinking through some possible interventions, such as recognizing the productive value of idleness and the art of being “good enough.”

Facilitated by: John Schulz, Ph.D. candidate in English, and McGraw Center University Administrative Fellow
