Year in Photos 2016

To commemorate this wild year, I've put together some of my favorite images I have made. A lot has changed this past year, including myself as a photographer. Some months were harder to choose from than others, but doing this project did make me nostalgic. 2016 had its moments.

At the start of 2016 I was finishing up my first internship at the Lincoln Journal Star. After six months of working there I had developed a lot of skills and was on a roll. I got to photograph my first Olympic sports event, which was something I had dreamed of for a long time. Winter sports kept me busy for a while.

In April I competed in the Omaha World-Herald's college shootout. Running around Kearney on foot was stressful, but I ended up finding a mother and son at a park dropping parachutes. This pair of images won me the contest.

Polhemus Coen-Walker, age 6, and his mother Christa Walker watch their parachutes fall from the top of the Gottschalk Tower at Yanney Park in Kearney, Neb. on Friday, April 22, 2016.
Christa Walker throws a parachute off of the Gottschalk Tower at Yanney Park in Kearney, Neb. on Friday, April 22, 2016. Walker and her son come to the tower often to get exercise and have fun simultaneously. "It started when I got him a parachute last Easter," Walker said. "I thought that buying him more would have saved us from going up the stairs as much, but it just got more fun."

In May I shot the Lincoln Marathon. I biked at least 20 miles in the rain that day following the runners (which I deem to be insane). I will never forget that assignment, and I will never run a marathon.

I also spent three weeks in Nepal on my final Global Eyewitness trip. Kathmandu was a great city, with some unforgettable views. My story was about cremation ceremonies. In those three weeks I saw dozens (if not hundreds) of cremations, as well as watching a person take their last breath. Those three weeks were emotionally challenging, but well worth the experience.

After Nepal, I was back on the saddle at the Lincoln Journal Star as a full-time intern. It was unforgettable summer.

The highlight of my year was covering the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. The combination of doing what I love with another one of my passions, and in my own backyard, couldn't have been more of dream come true.

With school back into full swing I was back at The Daily Nebraskan as photo editor. I didn't shoot much, but I did travel to the Northwestern football where I got this image with my phone.

Nebraska's Micheal Rose-Ivey (15), DaiShon Neal (9) and Mohamed Barry (7) kneel during the national anthem before the game against Northwestern on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at Ryan Field.

It was an unexpected moment. I was on the field with the 400mm lens, and three players dropped to their knees for the national anthem. The story lent itself to a great opportunity for The Daily Nebraskan to use an interactive.

I also began working on a project for my in-depth reporting class. The story of Colonel Tom Brewer is just one of the projects to come out of the class, which is focused on Whiteclay, Neb.

It's been a good one. Excited to see what 2017 has in store.

Thanks for looking.
