Day 1: Language is the main way humans gain knowledge of the world and proper understanding of language is necessary for proper understanding of knowledge. Ever since ancient civilizations there has been a form of shorthand writing present and it has evolved with the times into the type of “texting”. Shorthand was used so that within a select group of people who knew the language could understand the knowledge while other outsiders could not understand what it said. Because of this, there is a lack of understanding a language which leads a lack of understanding knowledge. By lacking the proper understanding of language, it alters the way one perceives and understands the knowledge that they receives.

Day 2: Language, in all forms, is the source of all the knowledge that we gain in the world and any discrepancies in language can effect how an individual understands knowledge that they are receiving. Shorthand was used so that within a select group of people who knew the language could understand the knowledge while other outsiders could not understand what it said. In this way, there is a lack of understanding a language which leads to the inability to gain knowledge. The role that language has on knowledge is monumental and it is impossible to understand knowledge without an understanding of the language. By lacking the proper understanding of language, it alters the way one perceives and understands the knowledge that they receives.

Language in it’s written form is the easiest to understand and analyze over a period of time. Elective Reading: I read "Engines of our Ingenuity. No. 2771: Shorthand" by Andrew Boyd from the University of Houston. In this elective reading I learned about shorthand writing and how it has evolved throughout time. I did not know about a type of shorthand other than the texting shorthand that we have. After reading this I thought to myself, "how difficult it is to implement a new way of shorthand to make gaining knowledge easier?" When I was looking at the shorthand that Boyd used as an example, I realized that it was very confusing to understand. So it was serving it's purpose but it was still very unusual. I feel that if one made a simpler version of shorthand, it would be more easier to understand and more people would be able to use it.

Extension Proposal

I think the TED talk How language transformed humanity by Mark Pagel is a prescribed reading title that we should add to this list because it gives background on how humans in general have used language dating back to prehistoric times. This TED talk shows how humans evolved to start sharing ideas through a way of language since it was necessary to progress at a greater rate. This TED talk shows what separated humans from our ape cousins. It shows how the need for more communication in a language is very helpful to our modern world since it makes life so much easier for everyone.

Conclusion

We have now completed our project for this way of knowing. This is the first time we have done a written project and I think that our group was lucky that we had language for this. I learned a lot about how writing in TOK is different than writing for other classes since you have to be very meticulous in how you write.
