LES NEWS September

A Note from the Principal...

And just like that, it is September! We have had a great start to the school year. We are still waiting on some things to get finished with our building renovation, but it is really starting to come together. We are excited that we will get to use our new cafeteria/kitchen next week! We will be sending information soon about an Open House to view both schools and all of the updates.

Important information

Trash Bag Fundraiser

The LES trash bag fundraiser ends Monday, September 3rd. If you are participating, please have order forms turned in so that we can process the order. Also, thank you for your support. We understand it is a task to participate in fundraisers, however they are important to our school. The money we raise helps to provide rewards/incentives, host events such as Veteran's Day and Grandparent's Day, go on field trips, provide recess equipment, and much much more! Orders should arrive in 4-6 weeks.

Box Tops for Education

Over the years, Box Tops for Education has provided LES the opportunity to earn a little extra money on the side through Box Tops labels on various products. They are slowly going away from putting the labels on products, however, they have made it much easier! Just download the App and scan your receipt to start earning cash for Loogootee Elementary today!

School Pictures

Picture Day is quickly approaching! We are scheduled for pictures on Monday, September 9th. We will be using the same company as last year, Inter-State Studio. We will be taking individual pictures, as well as class pictures. Click on the link below to order online. Also, information will be sent home this week.

Dyslexia Screening

Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, Indiana’s schools must meet added requirements to identify, as early as possible, struggling readers who show risk factors for dyslexia and then provide systematic, sequential, and multisensory instruction to meet their needs. In December all students in grades kindergarten through second grade will undergo a universal screener to check their skills in six different areas. You can go to the school website for more information.

Car Rider Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

Thank you for your patience with the new car rider arrival/dismissal procedure. It is beginning to go quicker. Below are just a few reminders to help speed up the process.

  • If you have to get out of the vehicle for any reason, please pull up past the safety poles so that we can keep the line moving.
  • Make sure your child exits the vehicle on the right side nearest the sidewalk.
  • If someone different is picking up your child, make sure they know the procedure.
  • Do not allow your child out until your vehicle is between the safety poles or the supervisor has allowed you to.
  • Have your child ready to exit when pulling up to the safety poles.
Parent Meeting

On Wednesday, September 11th, we will be hosting a parent meeting for K-2 and 3rd/4th parents to explain beginning of year testing scores and what they mean. The K-2 Meeting will be from 5:30 PM-6:00 PM and the 3rd/4th Meeting will be from 6:15-6:45 PM. THe meeting will be held at LES. Scores will be sent home later this week.

Mane Traits of a Lion for Success

Last year, LCSC incorporated the "Mane" Traits of a Lion for Success. The ten traits above are a common set of expectations for Loogootee students K-12 to learn and live by. Over the last week, Mrs. Wade visited classrooms to explain the Mane traits and what each one looks like at school. These "Mane" Traits are also used to encourage positive behavior.

Each month, we highlight a Mane Trait and select someone from each class as Student of the Month. Each student also has a Mane Trait card that they can get punched when a teacher observes the traits in action. Once a student gets 10 punches on their card, they can turn it in for a prize and are recognized at Monday Morning Meetings. At the end of each month, we have a drawing for 10 winners to win bigger prizes. We will also be drawing one card at the end of the year for a Grand Prize!

Accelerated Reader Program

Practice makes perfect! One of the best predictors of academic success is the amount of time a child spends reading. In order to improve reading skills, students need to practice their reading at least 15 minutes each day. To encourage our students to read, we have an Accelerated Reading (AR) Challenge. Books that students check out from the public library, read at school, or have at home are likely to have an AR test your child can take at school. Students can earn rewards for reaching different point levels.

  • 10 Points - “Book Worm”
  • 20 Points - Homework Pass
  • 30 Points - Extra Recess
  • 40 Points - Frozen Treat
  • 50 Points - AR Wristband
  • 65 Points - Book
  • 80 Points - Pizza Party
  • 100 Points - Pie in the Principal’s Face
  • 125 Points - Dairy Master Lunch
  • 150 Points - Amazing Reader T-Shirt
  • 175 Points - 1 Day Pool Pass
  • 200 Points - Lunch at Lake View

In addition to the prizes above, the top 2 readers will get a day to be "Principal for the Day" with Mrs. Wade.

We also have a schoolwide goal. The goal for each month is to get 1,000 points, which totals to be 9,000 points by the end of the year! If the school reaches their goal by the end of the month, they get a chance to spin the wheel at morning meeting to see what the school-wide reward will be!

Attendance Incentives

The attendance policy at Loogootee Elementary is based on the premise that something important happens each day in each class. We understand that some absences are unavoidable. However, good attendance is key to student success. We have put incentives in place to promote the importance of attendance at school. Each week, the class with the best attendance percentage gets to place the "Attendance Key" outside their door for the following week. Also, the grade level with the best attendance gets to pass around the candy basket throughout the entire grade. We will also be recognizing students monthly for perfect attendance.

  • Meeting Accelerated Reader Goals
