Spotlight CELEBRATING PONTIAC SCHOOL DISTRICT'S SUCCESS

HARVARD PRESIDENT AND PONTIAC NATIVE LARRY BACOW ENCOURAGES STUDENTS

Newly inaugurated Harvard University President Lawrence Bacow, a Pontiac native, recently visited International Technology Academy and Pontiac High School students to discuss pathways to higher education and ways in which colleges and universities can be active and productive partners in our schools.

Bacow, along with Bridget Terry Long, dean of the Graduation School of Education at Harvard, toured the robotics lab and spoke with teachers about how to best prepare students for college.

Bacow noted that Harvard students from families with incomes below $65,000 have their tuition paid for with a scholarship. He encouraged students to apply, despite the perception that it's impossible to be accepted. "There's only one student we absolutely never admit to Harvard. That's the one who doesn't apply," Bacow said.

Bacow attended Webster Elementary, Washington Middle School and Pontiac Central High School while growing up in Pontiac.
