Transcendentalism Pop Culture Project By Victor sanchez

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

-Walden, Henry David Thoreau

When this song came out in 2013, it showed fans who Miley Cyrus really is. Miley is a wild, free living pop singer that wants to show her real self. In the video "We Can't Stop" by Miley Cyrus, she portrays in the song that she can do what ever she wants. She will do whatever she wants and wont care even if people tell her other.

I believe she fits best with this tenet of transcendentalism because non-conformity is showing who you are and don't take in what others have to say. For example some lyrics in her song are, "It's our party we can do what we want to, It's our house we can love who we want to........." This shows that Miley can do and say any actions at her own will.

Self- Reliance

“Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string”

- “Self Reliance”, Ralph Waldo Emerson

The quote of Emerson basically tells you to always trust and believe in your self no matter what. It is always best to believe in your self first because that's how you will become successful. Believing in your self is your best medicine to give yourself when you are ready to give up on your self and have your life go down hill.

This scene from "Pursuit of Happiness" is when Chris (Will Smith) and his son are on the basketball court and Chris is telling his to never give up on his dreams and to always believe in yourself. That is when his son says "I'm going pro". This means that his son has realized is he wants to be successful and be something in life, then he has to believe in himself.

Importance of Nature

“In the woods we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life- no disgrace, no calamity…”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

The quote by Ralph Emerson signifies that the importance of nature can take you away to somewhere where you can escape to your own paradise and just be in peace with nature. Nature can take you to wonders and peace that can save you and make you realize how important nature is.

In the movie WALL-E which hit the big screen in 2008, it is about a little robot that can make boxes out of trash. He is set off on an adventure with a new friend named EVE and her mission is to look for a plant or something that resembles nature and to report back to space where all the humans are waiting on a ship. As WALL-E learns what the mission he try's to save the plant.

At the end of the movie the obese humans were put to work to put their planet back to order. They do so as planting trees, working in the oceans and streams and other tasks. They learn that nature is really important because that is the planet they live in.

Favoring Reason Over Intuition

“That man is rich whose pleasures are the cheapest.”

- “Journals 1856,” Henry David Thoreau

The quote by Thoreau is about people who are rich do not pleasure what the have the most as people who barely have anything. That the poor are more appreciative about things they receive and what they believe. The rich would believe anything and would not do anything to go against. While others go with their wit and go against or toward the problem to fix it.

Steve Jibs pursued his dreams and his products have become household items that almost everyone uses today. He was told that he was crazy for even think about anything called the 'iPhone' or "iPad." Which was a big hit when the iPad came out in Spring of 2010. People doubted that you can transport things you love on the go with a bigger version of the regular sized phone. He proved them wrong by creating the impossible pieces of technology. The world is very grateful for him following his dreams and not believed what others would say.

He is a great example of favoring intuition over reason. He always though outside of the box and now almost everyone person has heard of him or uses at 1-2 of his products. As his company is still producing new, engaging pieces of technology.

Simplified Life

“Our life is frittered away by detail. An honest man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes, and lump the rest. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.”

- Walden, Henry David Thoreau

In most reasons the Amish people always fit into the simple life category. The Amish are group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships with Swiss Anabaptist origins. In the early 18th century, many Amish and Mennonites emigrated to Pennsylvania for a variety of reasons. Amish church membership begins with baptism, usually between the ages of 16 and 25. Once a person is baptized with the church, he or she may marry only within the faith.

When the Amish people work they usually do it in the simple way they can. They try to have a simple life because they feel so pressured about regular life. Such as taxes, education, law and its enforcement, and occasional discrimination and hostility are areas of difficulty. Which is why they exclude themselves from modern life and live in their own world. For example, they build their houses out of wood, grow and plow their own crops and other tasks they must do in order to live.

The Amish do not believe in technology as they believe it is dangerous and over whelming. They believe that the basic knowledge offered up to that point is sufficient to prepare one for the Amish lifestyle. Almost no Amish go to high school and college. They believe it is more important to learn about surviving instead of learning.
