2017 Smith College Indoor Track and Field Preview

Coach Carla Coffey and the Smith College track and field team will begin the 2017 indoor season when the Pioneers host the 25th Anniversary of the Smith Invitational Saturday, January 21. "We are looking forward to hosting our second and final indoor home meet this weekend," said graduate assistant coach LJ Que. "The team really takes pride in practicing in such a wonderful facility and they look forward to having their first meet in 2017 at our home track."

Smith will then head north for their first road meet of the season at the Southern Maine Invitational on January 28. "It has always been a wonderful team bonding trip," said Que. "Our first year graduate assistant coach, Molly Carl had a wonderful student-athlete career there and we are looking forward to paying her Alma Mater a visit."
On February 10, Smith will take a select group to the Boston University Valentine's Invitational. "This meet is a wonderful opportunity for those selected athletes to compete against Division I and other high caliber programs," said Que.
The Pioneers will look to qualify for the New England Division III Championship meet throughout the indoor season.
Zoe Rubinstein along with Amelia Stapleton have been named captains for the 2017 season. Rubinstein aims to qualify for the NCAA Championship on the pole vault after already qualifying for the Indoor New England Championships. Stapleton will be a top competitor in the sprint events.
The Pioneers have been officially preparing for the indoor season since the end of October and it has been a lot of fun to see the team's dynamic grow stronger and closer. "The biggest improvement we have seen with the team as a whole is their power and strength, said Que." We have to thank our new head strength and conditioning coach, Jake Turner, our brand new weight room and the team's love for weight lifting."
Stapleton will lead a strong first year class of Frances Duncan (middle distance runner), Hannah Stevens (multi-events), Iris Afantchao (high jump), and Hannah Inman (throws).
