Internship Spotlight: Omari DeBerry

Rising junior Omari DeBerry chose to stay in Columbus this summer and participate in the Huntington Bucks Go Pro 1.0 Program this summer, interning with Ohio State's Department of Athletics in the area of administration. The Huntington Bucks Go Pro internships are the signature program in the Eugene D. Smith Leadership institute.

About Huntington Bucks Go Pro

Huntington Bucks Go Pro is an eight-week internship that provides real-world work experience and professional development. The program is designed to prepare student-athletes for life after sport through experience in a professional setting and participation in intentional professional development sessions that are crafted to meet the unique needs of student-athletes.

Why were you interested in this internship?

“I was interested in Bucks Go Pro because of the reputation the program has throughout the athletic department and amongst other student-athletes. I have never had work experience before, so it excited me to have the opportunity to learn and grow through this program. In addition to working in the field of our choice, Bucks Go Pro 1.0 has a professional development aspect. This aspect was very beneficial in my mind for someone who had never had a job before. I was already planning to stay on campus this summer, so adding an internship in Columbus was important to my development as a young professional.”

What was a typical day like for you?

“I work out with my teammates in the morning and then go to professional development on Mondays and Wednesdays until noon. After that, I work on out-of-the-office projects that are assigned to me or with my fellow interns on our group project. Our group project is focused on an area of the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute called Sundays in The Shoe. The group project has been fun because we are reformatting Sundays in The Shoe, a program that affects us as student-athletes. Our goal is to redesign this program and implement it in the fall. Being able to see the results and the effect of our project will be incredible.”

What are the most valuable things you've learned this summer?

“I have learned how to be an employee. I have learned how to assimilate into a work culture. As I said, the professional development piece of Bucks Go Pro 1.0 has been the most effective. I have learned networking skills through this internship, presentation skills and how to present my resume. Not only have I had the opportunity to sit in meetings with my boss and their colleagues, but also contribute in those meetings. That is something I never had the opportunity to do, but one that I’m thankful for. I have also been able to apply the skills I have learned through sports which is exciting to have the opportunity to showcase those skills through another medium.”
