As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good–except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’’”
“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Question: What kind of man was talking to Jesus? Go back to passage above to find out.
Question: Was this man proud or humble?
Question: How did Jesus treat this man?
Jesus looked at this man and loved him. He saw past the man’s pride. Jesus also showed love by speaking truth to the man. He told him that he should give up everything to follow God.
Loving people the way Jesus does means that we...
- Don’t run away from people that sin against us. Love turns the other cheek.
- Always tell the truth. If we think we are loving people by lying to them or shielding them from the truth, we are wrong.
Is there someone that you avoid or ignore, because they are different, unkind or proud? How does Jesus treat that person?
Ask God specifically who you can love today. Now ask God how you can love that person. Do what he says.
