Anthen vs Sparta

The Athens had the stronger Navy while the Sparta had the stronger Army; this war lasted for 26 years bring destruction, death and famine, devastation to Greece.

The Athens defeated and took over their fleets of the Persian armies. It took the Spartans many years before they were able to battle them at sea. The Spartans feared the Athens was growing to strong and powerful.

The Spartans were warriors, they trained and lived to fight in battles.

Pericles 494 to 429 BCE

Pericles, master orator was expanded the massive Athens empires. He assisted with new architectural ideas, the Parthenon temple of Athena Nike and Acropolis.

Acropolis of Athens, the upper city. This is one of greatest structures built, place of safety in times of invasions.

The Athens dominated the seas, and the Spartans dominated the land. The Athens built long wall (around 4-5 miles long) from the seaport Piraeus to the city. This allowed them to continue trade without going outside of the city where the Spartans awaited.

The wall was protection but it also harbor disease and eventually the plague 75,000 to 100,000 people lost their lives.

Peace of Nicias

Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (420-413 BCE), this treaty was signed for 30 years, but it only lasted for six years. Athenians attacked Sicily. Athenians lost and had to retreat.

After the war, Sparta was the ruling state of Greece.
