The epicenter of the earthquake was off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake had a magnitude of about 9.2 and lasted between 8 and 10 minutes. This was the third most powerful earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph and had the longest duration of faulting ever recorded.

The resulting series of tsunamis killed between 230,000 and 280,000 people in 14 countries.
