Since 2016, La Casa de Don Pedro has been re-engaging high school drop outs back into the classroom with our Youth In Motion Alternative High School, as a partner in Newark’s Opportunity Youth Network. Youth in Motion goes far beyond typical high school equivalency preparation courses because it provides individualized academic support and career counseling.
In 2017, out of the 25 youth in the program, 84% completed their high school equivalency degree. With Newark’s graduation rate at less than 70%, this was no small feat. Part of the program’s success comes from small, intensive classes combined with supportive counseling to help students manage family or social stressors. With strong ties to local colleges and job training programs, we help guide our young people on a pathway to success.
