AHR Architects is leading the way for Developing the Young Workforce. Having realised that employers have vital knowledge and industry experience that can be shared with young people, AHR is offering work experience opportunities for young people in schools in Glasgow and the surrounding area.

AHR started their offer of a one-week work experience placement for one pupil per month. When they were approached by a school, three years ago, to take an extra student they agreed on a one-off basis, however, they were pleasantly surprised that having two students rather than just one was very beneficial.

AHR assign a small project to the students – ‘What does the ultimate classroom look like?’

Students undertake research, spend time with AHR architects to develop their ideas and present their idea to staff at the end of the week

“Developing a structured programme really benefits the young people who spend time with us. There feedback has created a high demand amongst the schools and authorities we work with and it also keeps our staff on their toes because the capability of the young people gets to shine through.”

Richard Blair, Director, AHR Architects

One of the huge benefits of this project is that young people leave with a tangible piece of work and AHR has the opportunity to gain new ideas from the young people and staff are very impressed by the energy they bring to the organisation.

Since AHR introduced this work experience model, 30 young people have benefitted from the experience with half so far pursuing a career in architecture - or a similar - field.
