Academic Questions and Answers

Q: What happens if I cannot view my module on Canvas?

A: We can check Canvas modules to see which students are on the module. We will then add any missing students to the Canvas module after checking the student has this module on their timetable. If already on module but still unable to view then we will refer to the Digital Education Team. digitaleducation@acm.ac.uk

Q: What should I do if I cannot submit my assignment to Canvas?

A: We can go through the process of submission to Canvas, 'Turnitin' is the method that sometimes causes most confusion, this is due to having to scroll down to view the submission section. We will then guide the students to submission and checks to verify. Any late submissions will be explained to students by the support hub advisor. Level 4s can submit within a late window without penalty, Level 5 and 6s can submit in the late window but will be capped at 40%.

Q: How do I get more credits for tutorials credits?

A: You can book more credits via the MyACM app, although a member of the Student Support Hub can book on your behalf should you have any difficulty in this process. It is worth noting that in order to gain more credits, checks will be had on your attendance to see if you qualify. If you have good attendance then extra credits are granted. If low attendance extra credits are denied, a member of the Student Support Hub will be able to give you an explanation on how best to proceed and better your attendance.

Q: How do I get more credits for room bookings?

A: This is something you can do yourself via the MyACM app, should you have any difficulty in this process a member of the Student Support Hub can help you with this. It is worth noting that in order to gain more credits, checks will be had on your attendance to see if you qualify. If you have good attendance then extra credits are granted. If low attendance extra credits are denied, a member of the Student Support Hub will be able to give you an explanation on how best to proceed and better your attendance.

Q: I have an issue with my attendance statistics, what should I do?

A: Usually this query is regarding incorrect statistics (ie not being marked in to lectures). A member of the Student Support Hub will go through attendance per lecture for the term with you. Based on pattern and reasons given, we can make a judgment call on altering attendance statistics.

Q: Can I meet with a specific ACM member of staff?

A: You can request information on which member of staff is best to speak to regarding wellbeing, Attendance, Engagement, Academic and financial meetings. We can assess the concern and refer or book with the specific staff member. Should you require contact with a member of staff please log this request via Help Desk or relevant email address.

Q: When will results be published?

A: Students after assessment periods may ask when the results will be published. As there is new dates for this information per assessment period the dates change. The Assessment team are contacted by a member of the Student Hub Team, then once the information is gathered it is then passed onto students.

Q: Can you help me with my Timetable?

A: At the beginning of a term timetables are made and sent out to all students. Sometimes there are issues with the times and dates of some lectures. The reason for needing timetables changed vary but usually timetables are set in stone and cannot be changed. Only medical reasons justify a timetable change. We will contact the member of staff who works on timetabling. Alternatively contact our registry team registry@acm.ac.uk.

Q: Can you help with Faulty Equipment?

A: We understand the frustration felt when equipment breaks as we know it impacts ability to practice, study and engage in lessons. In these cases we try to fix the problem as soon as possible by contacting the facilities team.

Q: What should I do if I lose my ID card?

A: Some students misplace or lose their ID cards. In these instances we refer you to idcards@acm.a​c.uk to order a replacement. The cost of a new ID card is £5. If you do not have an ID card on show you will be asked to leave the campus building.

Finance Questions and Answers

Q: When do I need to apply for Student Finance?

A: Applications open on the Student Finance system in March and you should apply as soon as possible.

Q: How often do I need to apply?

A: You need to apply for each year of study.

Q: Can I apply online?

A: Yes, it is a much quicker and easier way of applying, however if you are an EU student you will need to complete a paper application form. https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-forms

Q: Which institution do I put in?

A: It depends on where you study. If you are studying at Birmingham or Guildford campus, you would put ACM Guildford LTD. If you are studying at our London campus, you would put Falmouth University, as this is the University awarding your degree.

Q: Will the student loan cover the full tuition fee?

A: Yes, you can now apply for the full tuition fee, so you will not have any top-up fees to pay.

Q: How much are the course fees?

A: For new students starting in September 2019 the fee for the foundation year is £9250 and the fee for the 2 year accelerated degree is £11100 per year. The fees are reviewed and subject to change on a yearly basis. Continuing students please contact studentfinance@acm.ac.uk who can confirm your fees.

Q: Will I receive a maintenance Loan?

A: If you are a UK student, yes. If you are an EU student, under the current ruling, no. EU students are only eligible if they have lived in the UK for more than 5 years before the 1st day of their course.

Q: How much maintenance loan will I get?

A: Maintenance loans are means tested and the amount awarded depends on your household income. You can use the online calculator to get an estimate of your entitlement here https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator.

Q: Do you offer tuition fee waivers?

A: We do offer a tuition fee waiver to students who cannot access full course funding due to student finance caps within their region, i.e Scotland, Wales and N.I. Students who may fall under this category should email studentfinance@acm.ac.uk for further information.

Q: I have studied at degree level before, will I still get a student loan?

A: Depending on how many years you have studied before, you may be entitled to part funding. You will need to contact Student Finance and ask them to confirm your entitlement.

Q: Do you offer bursaries?

A: Yes, we offer bursaries too.

Q: When is the Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan paid?

A: On confirmation of Registration, the Maintenance Loan will be paid direct to the student in September, January and April (Start of each term). On confirmation of attendance, the Tuition Fee Loan amount will be paid direct to the institution in October, February and May.

Q: When would I start paying it back?

A: You will start to pay back your Student Loan once you have completed your course and you start to earn over £25,000 a year.

Q: I am a self funding student, how and when do I pay my fees?

A: We have various payment methods and installment options for self funding students. Please email studentfinance@acm.ac.uk for more information.

Q: How do I apply for a travel bursary?

A: Diploma students may be eligible for a travel bursary, to apply please email studentbursary@esc.ac.uk

Q: How do I apply for DSA (Disabled Students allowance)?

A: When you apply for Student Finance, let them know you wish to apply for DSA and you will need to complete an application form and send necessary evidence to support your application to them.

Q: I am applying for a scholarship, do I still need to apply for student finance?

A: It is recommended that you apply for student finance even if you have applied for a scholarship as it takes some time to process applications. If you are offered a scholarship you can then withdraw your student finance tuition fee application.

Q: I am experiencing financial hardship, what help can I get?

A: Current HE students can apply for a hardship loan via Student Services. The maximum amount you can borrow is £1000. Students will need to provide evidence of financial hardship and be engaged on their course.

Q: Can I get help with travel costs?

A: Students under 18 years of age may be eligible for a travel bursary. You can apply via East Surrey College by emailing them at studentbursary@esc.ac.uk.

Wellbeing & Counselling Questions and Answers

Q. What is wellbeing support?

A. The Student Support system aims to help students maximise their potential and achievement throughout their ACM journey.

Our team is experienced at providing advice and guidance relating to issues that students may face during their studies.

In addition to providing pastoral support we operate a student referral system to signpost those with specific needs to appropriate internal and external support services.

The service we offer is discretionary and free.

If you think that you could benefit from the support that they offer, hit the Help Button or email studentsupport@acm.ac.uk to request a one to one appointment.

Q. How do I request counselling?

A. This service offers up to 10 sessions with a trained Counsellor with whom students can discuss issues that are troubling them in a safe, supported and confidential environment. This service is completely free.

Q. What is Big White Wall

A. As part of our commitment to ensuring that we meet the mental health and wellbeing needs of our students we have developed a partnership with Big White Wall.

Students are able to register for an account using their ACM email address and have access to this service.

Big White Wall is a free, anonymous and non-judgemental online environment supporting your mental health and wellbeing. The services offers support for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship problems and lifestyle challenges.

The service provides 24/7 online peer and professional support from trained counsellors. Big White Wall provides a safe space online to get things off your chest, explore your feelings and learn how to improve and self-manage your mental health and wellbeing.

This service is completely free.

Universal Services Questions and Answers

Q. What is Universal Services?

A. It is a service available to all students to access at any time during their studies where referral is not required. Students will be educated via a number of communication avenues to maximise the overall benefit to students where singular avenues may limit engagement.

Topics covered through this service are designed to underpin Personal, Social, Health and Economic education that will benefit our students whilst studying at ACM but also thereafter. It is a service designed to align with the Academy of Contemporary Music’s Vision, Mission & Values.

Universal Services is a structure that seeks to promote widening participation, understanding of personal and emotional wellbeing and to equip students of ACM with the necessary life skills that will support them in the future. This is achieved within the current structures and frameworks of ACM and it is made up of four sections;

Education, Events, Resources & External Support

Education & Resources

We deliver the ACM Pastoral Educational Program throughout the academic year. This program is focused on equipping students with a knowledge base that will benefit them throughout life through the development of personal, social, health and economic education. As part of the program we provide resources on specific topics via various media formats to maximise student engagement and we develop self help guides that students can access throughout their academic journey.

Events & External Support

We encourage student participation by signposting internal and external events, providing space for a visible presence of local and national charities / organisations and hosting campus wellbeing awareness days / weeks. This enables the students to benefit from a range of support throughout their studies which will aim to support their journey of self discovery, feelings of belonging and enriching their student experience whilst studying at ACM.

Q. What are Awareness Weeks?

A. Student Services run regular Health and Wellbeing Weeks on each campus. These involve activities, guests and information that focus on promoting positive wellbeing across our campuses. Look out for the latest information and guest line-ups which will be advertised around campus.

ACM Awareness Weeks:

National Sexual Health Week (September)

This week aims to bring awareness to sexual health. Throughout the week ACM will signpost local Sexual Health Clinics and welcome in professionals from these clinics to have a presence on campus.

Postural Awareness Week (October)

This week focused attention on posture awareness, presenting information to students on how best to look after themselves and encouraging them to maintain better posture so not cause injury in later life, something that could negatively impact their future career opportunities.

National Chocolate Week (November)

This event is a socialising opportunity to encourage students to meet like minded creatives and develop new relationships after a month of being a part of the ACM community.

Each campus is bought a chocolate fountain, marshmallows and fruit to host at the hub, reception or student areas within their campuses.

ACM Seasonal Vulnerabilities (December)

This week raised awareness of difficulties some people may face when approaching the festive period. We offer numerous resources with information relating to relationship struggles, substance misuse, poverty, homelessness and loneliness.

ACM New Year New You (January)

This week promotes ideas for a healthy lifestyle, leaving behind unhealthy lifestyle choices of the previous year and planning healthy ones for the year ahead.

ACM Valentines (February)

This week aims to build awareness of what a healthy relationship looks like. It will put focus on signs of abuse and how to find support.

Equality & Diversity Awareness Week (March / April)

Equality and diversity is an important topic that affects the whole of society. No-one should be discriminated against due to their social standing, faith / belief, sexual orientation, gender or race.

Laws and government acts protect us from prejudicial judgment, we all have the same rights which are only slightly affected should we ever be linked to illegal activity. We have every right to challenge someones decision should it not sit well with us.

We all have a duty to make sure everyone in society is treated with respect and given the same opportunities that we have been given regardless of where they come from, if their views are different from us or if we agree with their way of life.

This week brings awareness to the need for Equality and Diversity across society and the Music Industry.

National Mental Health Week (May)

This week aims to promote Mental Health Awareness by encouraging students and staff to be open with each other, be it with friends, family or colleagues, about their mental health. We seek to encourage this for the positive benefits it will bring.

National Volunteers Week(June)

This week seeks to encourage students to engage in volunteering of local and national charities or organisations. This is to support students in gaining work experience that will strengthen their CV’s for the future.

Q. What is the Pastoral Development Education?

A. The key focus of this program is to provide our students with support throughout their educational journey for the following key areas:

Students of Further Education have the topics presented during timetabled lessons, this is as a result of Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) becoming 'an important and necessary part of all students' education throughout the country, PSHE education is compulsory in independent educational establishments from 2020.

Students of Higher Education are given the opportunity to attend workshops of the same presentations so as not to interfere with their timetabled lessons.

The Pastoral Development Education forms one part of a structure associated with Universal Services.

ACM Society Descriptions:

5 Aside Football (Guildford, Clapham & Birmingham)

Regular monthly games for all abilities and all genders. At £2 per game it is a great place to play footie with like minded students, meet new people and network in the local community.

Movie / Cinema (Guildford)

Monthly films chosen by you via social media voting presented on campus all for free, bring your snacks and chill out with your mates whilst watching classics, new releases as well the occasional anime feature for good measure.

LGBTQ+ Society (Guildford)

ACM fully supports our LGBTQ+ community, this society is just one of many ways in which we do. Join in local events, design and host your own or just join to get to know other students within this community.

Dance Society (Guildford)

ACM is full of creative people, staff and students. We love to celebrate creativity and what better way than to join our Dance society. For more information on this society or if you would like to start on at your campus please email the address above.

Musical Theatre Society (Guildford)

If you love Musical Theatre this society is clearly for you, with great relationships to local theatres and venues ACM have a variety of musicals, professional or amatuer to choose from. If that wasn't enough, we will also host regular open mic nights.

Supporting Women in Music Society (Guildford, Clapham & Birmingham)

ACM seeks to lead the industry in highlighting the equality differences between male and female artists, through this society we seek to promote and support all our female artists in planning and attending their performances.

BCrew Function Band (Clapham)

ACM Clapham’s very own function band play regular gigs throughout the year, if you would like to be a part of this function band contact the email address above. If computer games are your thing then sign up to the gaming society. Due to the nature of online gaming we will also host at various times of the year inter campus competitions.

Broadcasting Society (Clapham)

ACM Clapham’s Broadcasting society brings good music and great interviews to the fingertips and ears of every student through ACM Clapham Radio, podcasts and live streaming. Get involved with like- minded students from designing the onscreen avatars, timers and titling to presenting.

Christian Union (Guildford, Clapham & Birmingham)

Should you enjoy spending time with the Christian community then this society will be a great place to meet like minded students, enjoy opportunities to worship collectively and visit local churches and speakers.

Gospel Choir (Clapham)

The gospel choir is a great place for all students, whether on performance degrees or not to join together and sing uplifting songs. Learn how to harmonise and work as a team to master arrangements.

African Caribbean Society (Clapham)

All students are welcome to join in the celebration and engagement with Afro-Caribbean contributions to music and entertainment. Get involved through live events, talks and trips.

Q. How do I get involved in running an ACM Society?

Q. Who is leading ACM societies?

A. An ACM member of staff will take overall lead of individual societies, they will be the point of contact for the student lead who will liaise on proposals of events, activities and visits. The staff lead will request funding and monitor membership and attendance.

Q. What does it mean to be a Student Society Lead?

A. This is a great opportunity that looks good on a student’s CV. Students will have the ability to state that they have led a society, project managed events and have experience of working well within a team.

Perks and responsibilities of being the Student Societies Lead:

  • Discount for all events and activities led by their society
  • Monthly check in with the society staff lead
  • Write proposals for events they would like ACM to run
  • Liaise with their society members for future event ideas
  • Monitor the spending of their society
  • Ability to fundraise for future events or local charities
  • Liaison with their society’s local chosen charity

Q. What does it mean to be an ACM Society Member?

A. For a small subscription fee of £3 for the whole academic year (September - July) students will receive the following:
