Virtual Reality for Pilots Manchester Training Centre 24 July 2023

The VR challenge

Developing Expertise

Training Synergies

The Regulator

Virtual Reality training for pilots has been a long dreamed-of goal. The benefits of a realistic flight deck environment, accessed from home without the need to travel to a training centre. Cheaper for the airline, easier to schedule. Engaging for the pilot.

How can VR systems develop expertise?

Expertise - its relationship with experience

Is there one?

What makes an expert?

Demonstrating competencies and behaviours that promote a safe operation…..

How do we measure expertise?

CBTA competency assessment and grading, subjective and variable.

How can we train/transfer expertise?

With understanding of the traits and characteristics of expertise, derived from VR and eye tracking data, knowledge transfer can be directed and measurably effective.

Training Aircrew Competencies using Eye Tracking (TACET)

  • Reliable and accurate simulation of A320 flight deck
  • Incorporates the latest eye tracking technology
  • Pilot competency analysis software
  • Real time competency voice memo recording and playback via virtual interface

Psych Adaptive Virtual Environment (PAVE) which further develops TACET with incorporated metrics for emotion and anxiety.

More on this later…..

Our project was awarded development funding from the Government's Innovate UK (Research & Innovation) Initiative. Innovate UK promotes communication and cooperation between technologies and companies - this gave us an immediate boost to get on a full commercial footing by recognising the technology and market potential of TACET.
