Overview

Driving Question: How can we as CMS students demonstrate how to solve food challenges in our local and global communities.

In the 21st century there are several individuals in communities and globally that struggle to have a hot meal every day.

In a community financial challenges may allow individuals not to have a meal,

While on a global basis environmental issues such as deforestation, desertification, lack of water and water pollution may also be a challenge for the citizens of a country in growing crops for food.

Lack of food can result in malnutrition that can finally lead to death.

It is said ‘give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”

Egypt

This is Egypt.

Egypt is a country that has the Nile River. Egypt prospered for years because of the Nile River in the past. However, now Egypt has polluted the water so much that instead of making Egypt prosperous, it made Egypt worse. Egypt is suffering a few more environmental issues like water scarcity, but water pollution is the main environmental issue. Egypt is part of the Sahara Desert.

Crops you can Grow

If you want to be in Egypt you should grow a few plants that can help you live in Egypt

This is Thyme. Thyme is a plant that is used mostly as herbs. However, you can also eat them if you have a bad cough you can suck the thyme or nutrition and to help with your bad cough. Another way that thyme can help you is that it can boost the process of healing cuts. The reason why thyme is good to grow int he desert is that it likes sunny and dry environments. Also, it grows really fast.
Another plant that you can grow in the desert is the prickly pear. This plant is a succulent (cacti). This means that it can survive really well in the desert. The way that you grow prickly pear is to cut off the the spiky part of the cactus. Then, you put it in the sand. After a while, it should start growing. Once it starts growing you can eat the fruit of the pear. However, make sure you don't eat the spiky parts of the fruit. That is how you can grow the prickly pear.

You can grow eggplants in the desert. This is really good to grow in the desert because eggplants thrive in really sunny weather. They also can grow in sandy soil. Also, they take 16-24 which isn't that bad considering how long it takes to grow a tree. That is why an eggplant is good to grow in the desert.

I think that as you are in the Sahara desert it is a really smart idea to use a very smart method called crop rotation. All you have to do is to rotate what you grow as you grow your crops. You do this so that the soil that you use doesn't lose its' nutrients, and so that the soil can get some of its nutrients back.
If you are in Egypt you will see a lot of Arab people. They live in southern Asia and northern Africa. They live in about 22 different countries. That's why you will most likely see them in Egypt.

Math

This is also what we did in math. Everything that you see in red is what it looks like from the outdoor garden that our school has. The green is the planter box C dilated by 2. The blue is the same planter box dilated by 1/2.

We started this project by measuring the volume of the planter boxes behind the school. We did this so that we could find how much small pots can fit into the planter boxes. While we were doing this we solved a packet that our math teacher gave us. This packet had questions that had to do with proportions, unit rate, and converting U.S dollars into different country's currency. One of the questions in the packet told us to find the cost of 1 seed when they gave us the information of 50 seeds. We had to use unit rate in order to solve that question. Another type of question that we had to solve was finding the volume in feet and converting the volume into inches. We did this so that we can find how much soil we needed in order to find the cost of the soil. In the end we changed the U.S dollars into different country's currency. That is what we did in math for this PBL project.

Science

For science we started our project by planting our radishes. We started this project by splitting our team in half. One group got stars and the other group didn't. The group that did get the star got candy and they got better soil than the group that didn't get a star. I wasn't part of the "star club". Honestly, I felt a little jealous because the people with the star got better soil. After, splitting up the team we got our soil, and put in our seeds.

The main challenge that me and my group faced was water. We didn't know how much water that we needed to give to the plant, so in the beginning we gave it around 100 ml. of water. This lead to mold in the plant. After that we gave our plant a small amount of water a day. Another challenge we faced was that we had a one week holiday, so we couldn't come to our school and water our plant. Those were our main challenges.

After our sprout grew a little more we put it in the rooms that had the colored lights. In the room we had a flipped over table so that we can put our plants on it, colored lights, a timer to turn off the the lights at specific times, and cardboard walls so that other colored lights can't interfere with the colored lights that our class were using. The reason why we used different colored lights was to see if the color of the lights would affect the plants growth. I believe that the color of the light that we used did affect the growth of the light. I saw that the plants under blue and red light grew the best, but the ones under the green light didn't grow that well. Luckily this was supposed to happen. However, the lights next to the green plant may have gotten into the plant. For the next few days we watered the plant slowly. Me and my group believed that there was a relationship between water and growth. There seemed to be a lot more growth when we watered it little my little. I think that we can boost the growth of the plant if we put the plant under a blue or red light and if we give the water slowly. During that time the plant slowly grew to a 9 inch plant.

This is the days compared to the growth as you can see it steadily grew as the days went on, but it stopped growing later on.
