SEASONS A further explanation

seasons

the seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth's rotational axis away or toward the sun as it travels through its year-long path around the sun

the Earth has a tilt of 23.5 degrees relative to the "ecliptic plane" (the imaginary surface formed by it's almost-cicular path around the sun)

vocabulary to facilitate understanding

solstice: either of the two times in the year, the summer solstice and the winter solstice, when the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky at noon, marked by the longest and shortest days

equinox: the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun crosses the celestial equator, when day and night are of equal length (about September 22 and March 20)

winter solstice

the solstice that marks the onset of winter, at the time of the shortest day, about December 22 in the northern hemisphere and June 21 in the southern hemisphere

spring equinox

the equinox that marks the onset of spring, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth, about March 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and September 22 in the Southern Hemisphere

summer solstice

the solstice that marks the onset of summer, at the time of the longest day, about June 21 in the northern hemisphere and December 22 in the southern hemisphere

fall equinox

the equinox that marks the onset of fall, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth, about September 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and March 21 in the Southern Hemisphere
