Transition - Moving Up
Students have 2.5 school weeks left before we close for the summer holiday. Transitioning into the next phase of their school life is very important and despite the fact that we are at home we realise the next stage is important to your and your child.
A nuestros alumnos les quedan dos semanas y media antes de que terminemos el curso y nos vayamos de vacaciones. La transición hacia la siguiente etapa escolar es muy importante y, a pesar del hecho de que estamos en casa, creemos que el paso de curso es importante para ustedes y sus hijos.
In the Monday Communication Letter on Monday 8th June you will see a letter explaining about a dedicated area on the BSM Parent Portal called ‘Moving Up’; a site for all those families of children moving up. It will be in this area where you will be able to find resources, information and videos of introduction for the next phase of your child's life at school.

For parents in Reception, Jennie Clark our Key Stage One Coordinator will be sharing a presentation with you, regarding expectations and routines in Year 1. This will be followed up with an online meeting on Thursday 18th June, which is designed to give families an opportunity to ask the Year 1 team any questions that they may have.

Parents in Year 6 will have the opportunity of meeting key secondary colleagues in a Google Meet on Thursday 11th June, more information will be shared on Monday so please do look out for it.

I am conscious that as a parent you may think we survey too much, but if we are genuinely going to improve and get better with our Distance Learning programme we need to know your views so we can try and act upon them.

In the most recent survey 68 families completed it as opposed to the one previous where 156 families submitted feedback.

In the first Distance Learning Survey there were 7 areas that families had consistently asked us to address and improve and in survey 2 we asked families if there had been a recent improvement. Here are the following 7 key areas.

Most of the feedback for these 7 areas seem to suggest we are getting better but we are aware that we need to be consistent. We need to find a way of creating more reading tasks for students across the school and I have asked teachers to consider this in the next few weeks.

Life in isolation and the monotony of lockdown has been a struggle, as we continue to adjust to a different way of life but, by staying at home, you have protected each other and your communities. Thank you for keeping each other safe.

Now some of our students and staff are returning to schools in Spain and the UK whilst others will have to wait a little longer. Some things may be different to begin with, but we hope you are ready and looking forward to being back in school, so that learning can continue in the classroom in a safe environment for all.
Algunos de nuestros alumnos en España e Inglaterra están regresando a las aulas. Otros tendrán que esperar un poco más. Ciertas cosas podrán cambiar, pero esperamos que estaréis listos y con ganas de volver al colegio, para que el aprendizaje continúe otra vez en las aulas de forma segura.

ISP Europe Online Chess Tournament

On Thursday the 4th June more than 100 participants took part in the ISP ONLINE TOURNAMENT. It was a pilot programme and the first tournament of this kind organised by ISP. The games were BLITZ (just 3 minutes per move) and the competition was fierce.
Ayer Jueves 4 de Junio más de 100 niños participaron en el Torneo de Ajedrez online de ISP Europa. Se trata de un programa piloto y es el primer torneo de este tipo convocado por ISP. Los juegos eran blitz (sólo 3 minutos por movimiento) y la competición estuvo muy reñida.
Our 6 participants (Carlos B., Louis C., Pablo Q. and his brother Juan Héctor Q. as well as brothers Minjae and Taehwan K.) were amazing! They all come from Years 3-5, so you can imagine how brave they must have been facing the sixth-formers from Laude El Altillo.
Nuestros 6 participantes fueron Carlos B., Louis C., Pablo Q. y su hermano Juan Héctor Q., además de los hermanos Minjae y Taehwan K. y tuvieron una fantástica intervención. Todos son alumnos en cursos entre Year 3 y Year 5, así que os podéis imaginar lo bien que lo hicieron teniéndose que enfrentar a alumnos de Bachillerato de Laude El Altillo.
A bit of prestige to our tournament was added because a person who was behind its organisation was Daniel Escobar Dominguez, International Chess Federation FIDE Master himself, chess professor from Laude El Altillo School.
El torneo vino con un toque de prestigio porque una de las personas a cargo de la organización del mismo es Daniel Escobar Domínguez, Maestro de la Federación de Ajedrez FIDE y profesor de ajedrez precisamente en Laude El Altillo.
Our congratulations go to the top three schools: Laude El Atillo, Laude Newton College and Laude The Lady Elizabeth.

We came 7th with Minjae scoring 14 points for our team! He was our best player and received a one month premium subscription for the Chess24 platform. The next chess tournament will take place during the next academic year 2020-21... and this time I am sure we will beat them!
Con todo, nuestro colegio quedó en 7º puesto y ¡Minjae consiguió 14 puntos para nuestro equipo! Fue el mejor jugador de BSM y obtendrá una suscripción premium durante un mes a la plataforma Chess24. In Miss Gem and Miss Lou's Reception class the children are enjoying exploring the wonderful world of pirates. They have been counting coins, making their own pirate ships, conducting experiments with water and having a lot of fun as Captains of their learning!
En clase de Miss Gem y Miss Lou, en Reception, los niños siguen explorando el maravilloso mundo de los piratas. Han estado contando monedas, haciendo sus propios barcos pirata y haciendo experimentos con agua.

Year 1
In Year 1 last week we changed our Fridays and made them CHALLENGE FRIDAYS! The children had 3 challenges to complete, one from Mr Wilcock in Assembly, a Spanish challenge, and a Core Value Challenge. Last week the values were creativity, independence, resilience, communication and aspiration. Their challenge was to design and make their own pirate ship to link in with our English book Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs. We were really proud of their effort and the values they demonstrated, and they had a whole class Google Meet to share what they had done!
En Year 1 la semana pasada cambiamos nuestros Viernes y los convertimos en... ¡Retoviernes! Los niños tenían 3 retos que completar: uno que les puso Mr Wilcock en una asamblea, un reto de Español y un reto de uno de los Valores del colegio. La semana pasada los valores eran Creatividad, Independencia, Resiliencia, Comunicación y Aspiración. Se trataba de diseñar y construir su propio barco pirata, para enlazarlo con nuestro libro en inglés "Captain Flinn" y "Pirate Dinosaurs". Estamos muy orgullosos de todo el esfuerzo y los valores que han demostrado. De hecho, tuvieron una sesión de Google Meet para compartir con los compañeros todo lo que habían hecho.

Year 1 have been practising their phonemes r-rr in their Spanish classes and Seño Laura encouraged them to read aloud a poem about a dog named Ramón. Well done to Elsa, Dunia and Claudia who sent us these fantastic videos.
En Year 1 los niños han estado practicando los fonemas -r y -rr en sus clases de Español y Seño Laura les ha animado a leer un poema en voz alta sobre un perro llamado Ramón. Qué bien lo han hecho Elsa, Dunia y Claudia, que nos han hecho llegar estos vídeos.
Pirate Ana and Pirate Martin also created miniature theatres. Ana explained how she had made her pirate boat and she didn't miss out any of the details. Martin, with a little help from his dad, told us about a pirate called Carapapas who went to find treasure but was surprised by a huge storm. This was accompanied by dramatic music throughout. We think they were both fantastic!
Los piratas Ana y Martín también crearon teatros en miniatura. Ana nos explica cómo ha hecho su barco pirata y no se dejó atrás ni un detalle. Martín, con un poquito de ayuda de su padre, nos contó cómo un pirata llamado "Carapapa" fue a buscar un tesoro pero fue sorprendido por una enorme tormenta. ¡El relato tiene incluso banda sonora! ¡Ambos lo han hecho genial!

On Monday this week, we asked the children to measure their toys in cms and answer questions about their measurements. They did a great job as you can see.
El lunes de esta semana pedimos a los niños que midieran sus juguetes en centímetros y que respondieran algunas preguntas sobre estas mediciones. Como podéis ver, lo hicieron estupendamente.

Year 3N had their Live Friday Baking Session again today and made cupcakes and a variety of sponges. What a wonderful array of creative cakes! Miss Diane particularly loves the look of the star shaped buns so if there are any left over you know where to send them. 😋
Year 3 volvió a celebrar su Sesión de Repostería en directo e hicieron magdalenas y bizcochos. Salió una gran gama de pasteles muy creativos. A Miss Diane le encanta de forma particular los panecillos con forma de estrella, así que si ha quedado alguno... ¡ya sabéis dónde mandarlos! 😋

As part of their English work the children have been writing their own stories based on The Iron Man. Carmen and Hugo have written their stories using Google slides, Carmen also used her computer skills by adding new slides, adding pictures, changing the transition and adding sounds.
Como parte del temario de Inglés, los niños han estado escribiendo sus propias historias basadas en Iron Man. Carmen y Hugo han escrito las suyas usando Google Slides. This week the children were researching different animals and the foods that they eat. After their research, they created some wildlife videos to present their information. Ignacio got his sister involved to help him, or is it a real panda??

Year 6 have been inspired this week by Martin Luther King's powerful speech, 'I have a Dream'. They have written their own speeches about issues that bother them now and their hopes for the future. Please take a few minutes to read them, they are all extremely relevant; I challenge you not to shed a tear!
Los alumnos de Year 6 se han inspirado esta semana con el poderoso discurso de Martin Luther King "I have a dream". Han escrito sus propios discursos sobre temas que les preocupan ahora y sobre sus esperanzas de futuro. Les animamos a que se tomen unos minutos para leerlos porque son todos muy relevantes. ¡Y os retamos a que no echéis ni una lagrimita!

After all the tiring and difficult assessments last week, the Primary EAL students enjoyed some well deserved fun this week. Together, we researched and discussed different styles of poetry, reading our favourites to each other and watching videos on the internet. Armed with all this knowledge, these incredible children set off to become poets themselves. Each poet used their research to create or perform a poem. I think you will agree the results are incredible.
Tras las extenuantes evaluaciones de la semana pasada, los alumnos de EAL (English as an Additional Language) disfrutaron de algunos ratos de diversión esta semana. Estuvimos investigando y hablando de distintos estilos de poesía, leyendo nuestros poemas favoritos los unos a los otros y viendo vídeos en internet. Armados con todos estos conocimientos, los niños se lanzaron a elaborar sus propios poemas. Cada poeta usó su trabajo para crear o interpretar un poema. Y estaréis de acuerdo, los resultados son increíbles.

Year 7 and year 8 have been part of the Sparx maths trial that started the week before the lockdown. Maths teachers are now using the lesson function to set online work for students. Questions come with their very own help video to support students and teachers are always available on google meet should a student get stuck.
Los alumnos de Year 7 y Year 8 formaron parte de una prueba de matemáticas con Sparx la semana previa al confinamiento. Los profesores de Matemáticas están usando ahora la función "clase" para poner deberes online a los alumnos. Las preguntas vienen con su propio vídeo de ayuda para servir de apoyo a los alumnos, aunque los profesores están siempre disponibles en Google Meet si los alumnos se quedan atascados.
For each question they do students are awarded XP points. These points will eventually lead to House points and certificates. Over the last 6 weeks the Maths department have been recording these XP points and rewarding students' efforts with house points.

Each week, Dani and the monitors will set a challenge connected to the after school activities which you can do at home and record on video. Send your videos to Dani by email and each week, the after school activities department will choose the best ones who will receive a trophy.
