Weekly Newsletter Friday 23 October 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

Well, we have all made it to half term and unlike many other schools in the area, we have not had to close a bubble or send children home! This is down to the hard work of all children, parents and staff. Let us hope that next week we are able to enjoy some, socially distant, time outside kicking those autumn leaves about!

Although we cannot have a whole school assembly at the moment, staff are still choosing a star of the week from each class. The star of the week will receive a phone call home from the class teacher to explain why they are the class superstar. Our stars of the week this week are:-

Green Texts

After half term we will be resuming our weekly green texts for those children who have stayed on green, for behaviour, throughout the week. This means that they have applied themselves well to all aspects of their school work. Please look out for your child’s green text and congratulate them when they receive it.

House Captains

This week some of our Year 6 children have put themselves forward to be House Captains. They prepared and delivered a speech and then had an interview. Following this, there was a pupil vote. A huge well done to everyone who put themselves forward, we are very proud of you all.

Our House Captains & Vice Captains for this academic year are:

EYFS Resources

If the weather is unkind to us throughout half term ( I hope not) and you decide on a rainy day 'tidy up and clear out' please could you keep an eye out for some items that our EYFS team are on the hunt for:

Any help in sourcing such items would be much appreciated. Any donated items will be quarantined before they are used by children. Thank you.

Secondary School Applications

A reminder that applications for High Schools need to be submitted by the 31 October, which is during the half term break. Please see the admissions section on our website.

Parents’ Evening

Parents’ Evening is scheduled for the first week back after the half term break on Wednesday 4 November. Appointments are available to book via our online system and a text should have been sent to you all. Thank you to the parents who have already booked. As indicated last week, we are ‘attempting’ to hold a Zoom parents’ evening for those who would like one and offer phone calls for those parents who are not in the waiting room at the allotted time. There will be one appointment per child. We will send the meeting code and password out the day before parents’ evening so you should be able to log on. Please ensure that your username is identifiable to us. If you require help in booking an appointment then please contact the school office.

Year 6 Residential - PGL June 2021

If you wish your son or daughter to attend the residential trip next year please can you ensure the deposit is paid by Sunday 1 November, via your child's School Money account.

School Lunches

After the half term break we will be amending the lunch rota, in order that those children that have been having school packed lunches this half term have the chance to have a hot school meal. This means that over the course of the whole term each class will have had the option of a school hot lunch. So, following the half term break the year groups to receive a school hot meal will be Reception, Year 1, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. A school packed lunch will be prepared for those Year 2 and 3 children who have a school meal.

We are aware that some children changed their meal patterns earlier this term, from hot school meals to home packed lunches, and we understand the reasons for this. However, if your child would like to go back onto hot school meals after the half term break, please let us know by emailing the school office : office@avondale.blackburn.sch.uk

Each bubble will continue to have a dedicated zone in the Hall for eating, or they will eat in their classroom, and have a separate zone on the yard to play in.

Thank You

I would like to thank all of you for your support and cooperation over this half term. I know that things have been somewhat different to what we are used to, but together we have coped with these changes well. I also know that there has been lots of information coming home and I am grateful that you have been understanding and have taken on board what we have asked of you. I would, on behalf of all staff, also like to say how appreciative we have been for the kindness you have shown to us, the positive messages have cheered us and kept us going.

Unfortunately, we still face uncertainties for the upcoming school year. Together, we must remain flexible and willing to do what is best for our children, our families and our communities and so a small plea to adhere to the advice for our local area over the half term break.

I sincerely hope that you are able to enjoy next week and I look forward to seeing all our amazing Avondale children back in school on Monday 2 November.
