What's the Buzz? NiftY Durham Chats with Burt's Bees

I couldn't help but stop and see what the cool boxes were for, as they were being loaded into a truck near the ATC In Durham. We had just walked past the nifty Burt's Bees bee hive window, so I could make a pretty good guess what was up.

Burt's employees are giving back by supplying bee hives to organizations. Good for the recipients, and good for bee diversity too. They decorated the boxes during a fun, employee giving back day— which warms my entrepreneur heart :-)

Clockwise from Left: • You can see the bees & queen any time you visit the ATC in Durham (far north end of the campus above the basketball court) • What's inside the hive boxes: these beeswax & wire foundations are ready for the bees to get busy building honeycombs on • Chatting bees with friendly Burt's employees
Loading 'em up.
Fun decorated hive boxes

In our discussion, I really wanted to know what's the state of the bee decline. Yep, that's a unique phrase, 'bee decline'. We just moved from rural NY, in apple country and have heard farmers lamenting the loss of bees, and having to work out pollination systems with bee releases. In our chat, I learned there are many issues, and some controversy on the causes, but one key is our farming monoculture. The less variety of plants in a bee's range, (and other factors like pesticide buildup), the more unbalanced the bee health will, well...be. It makes me think of what I'm learning about Farm to Table in Durham (and through the great new Doc series on Netflix 'Chef's Table' (check out the Dan Barber one below.) Going back to basics is a powerful idea. And so is taking five minutes to stop rushing past something interesting, and really visit with people as I'm exploring my nifty, new hometown of Durham.
