Origin of Sport

  • Rugby was originated by William Webb Ellis in 1823
  • The sport was introduced to the U.S. in the mid 1800s and gained popularity in the late 1800s

How it is Played

  • There are two teams of fifteen people
  • The team can either pass, carry, or kick the ball to the end zone to score as many points as possible.
  • There are two halves of 40 minutes and a 5 minutes break halftime.

First Countries to Play Rugby

  • Rugby was first played all throughout Europe but mainly in England.
  • There are traces of Rugby being played in the middle ages.

Famous Athletes in the Sport

  • Notable players are Jonah Lomu, Richie McCaw, and Dan Carter.
  • Most of these Athletes are from New Zealand.

Equipment Used

  • Equipment consists of shirt, shorts, shoes, mouth guard, and some sort of head protection.
  • Also before a game there are tackle bags that are padded equipment that allows players to tackle each other without another player being involved.

Interesting Facts

  • The sports is a rough sport that is similar to football.
  • The rugby union officially became a professional sport is 1995.
