How to make a Protective Mask By Anna Smith

The coronavirus pandemic has forced many people to stay in their homes for weeks on end, in addition to heavy precautions for social distancing. However, people still need to attend essential businesses, such as grocery stores or pharmacies. In order to be prepared for an out-of-house venture, one should be equipped with a mask, according to the recommendations of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and World Health Organizations. Here is an easy step-by-step tutorial on how to make two types of masks suitable for protection—they also require no sewing!

T-Shirt Mask

Take an old cotton T-shirt, and cut straight across the bottom to get a rectangle of cloth. Next, cut a smaller rectangle out of the one already cut. Start at the edge, then cut the smaller rectangle about ¾ the way in. This should leave a smaller piece of fabric left that will be the mask portion. The other part remaining will be the strings, which will be cut at the ends so that they can be tied around the back of the head.

Bandana Mask

Any bandana will do just fine. First, fold the bandana in half. Then, fold the top down and the bottom up to make a thicker-layered rectangle that will go over the nose and mouth. Next, place two rubber bands or hair ties six inches or so apart on the fabric. Then, fold the fabric left outside the rubber bands inside and tuck them; this portion will be put on the face.

After usage, regularly clean the masks in the washing machine. After trips to public settings, stay safe and healthy to protect yourself and others. All pictures courtesy of the CDC.
