“ it is this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what is happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie” (20).
This statement was spoken by King Melchizedek to Santiago about the book Santiago is reading. By saying that the world’s greatest lie is that we are controlled by fate he is implying that individuals control their own futures. This passage/quote stood out to me by telling me about personal legends.
“When he was a child, that man wanted to travel, too. But he decided first to buy his bakery and put some money aside. When he’s going to spend a month in Africa. He never realized that people are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.”
This quote was spoken by King Melchizedek to Santiago about people’s dreams. By saying that people are capable at any time in their lives of doing what they dream of is implying that if they dream it they can achieve it. This quote stood out to me because this is like when I was little my family always told me that I could be whatever I wanted to be, I just had to work for it.
“If he makes a buying mistake, it doesn’t affect him. But we two have to live with our mistakes.”
This quote was spoken by the crystal merchant when he is telling Santiago that they are not rich and they can’t afford to make a mistake. This quote stood out to me because this is something that is a real life problem in my family. We can’t afford all the things that we want but once we make a mistake we can’t go back.
“You must always know what it is that you want.”
This quote was spoken by the old king to Santiago when he Santiago was working. This quote stood out to me because the message is something that most people think is true and it does relate to some people. This told me that if you have a goal you can achieve it. It also is meaning if you have a dream, follow it and it will come true.
“You have been a real blessing to me. Today, I understand something I didn’t see before: every blessing ignored becomes a curse. I don’t want anything else in life. But you are forcing me to look at wealth and at horizons I have never immense my possibilities are, I’m going to feel worse than I did before you arrived. Because I know the things I should be able to accomplish, and I don’t want to do so.”
This quote was spoken by the crystal merchant when he was telling Santiago that he was so lucky to meet him and it has helped the merchant that he is having something that he wouldn’t have dreamed of. This quote stood out to me because he was saying thank you for coming into this shop and changing what he didn’t approve at first but he came around. This told me that when we meet someone they can change you into the better.
“There is only one way to learn… It’s through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey. You need to learn only one thing more.” (129)
This is not the first time we have introduced to the idea that action and observation are the best ways to learn about the world and oneself. The meaning of the this quote also highlights a truth we already know about the real purpose of any quest story: self knowledge and discovery. It is only through Santiago’s actions that he learns what he needs to know to realize his dreams. In the same way, we learn lessons from everything we do in life. This quote calls us to learn about the world by experiencing it. This lesson is heart breaks are going to happen, they're bound to but the lesson is things bring you down but life goes on and things get better.
