Staples Boys Hockey Brings Overtime Victory Over Trinity Story and photography by madison andrews '20

Staples boys varsity hockey brought home an overtime win when they squared off against Trinity Catholic the night of Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford. Staples was poised for victory and the overtime triumph was sweet. As both teams were coming off losses and determined for a win, the battle came down to the team that wanted it the most.

Staples’ and Trinity’s starting lineups raced on the ice and both teams came on strong from the onset. Staples offense played very well taking solid scoring chances and the defense worked aggressively to keep the puck out of our zone. The Wreckers were controlling the game, and keeping the puck in their offensive zone for a majority of the game. Those pucks that made it through were flawlessly scooped up by goalie, Dylan Mace.

“We really stepped it up and played well,” Mace ’19 said. “From the get go, we came out flying and with lots of intensity.”

About halfway through the first period, Trinity racked up the first point on a lucky breakaway, a shot that snuck in just under the crossbar. At the end of the first period, Trinity led Staples 1 to 0.

In the second period, Staples defense held off Trinity and offense continued to press. Staples got in a groove with crisp passing that resulted in lots of shots on goal. Following a penalty for Staples, with four minutes left to the period Zach Strober ’19 scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Alex Goodman ’20. At the end of the second period, Staples tied it up with a score of 1 to 1.

In the third period, neither team relented a goal. Staples brought more momentum, but was held back by their opponent’s defense. Many great scoring opportunities were taken, but thwarted by Trinity’s goalie. The score at the end of the period remained 1 to 1.

This led the Wreckers to a sudden death overtime period, with both teams fighting for the win. Goodman’s goal led the Wreckers to the victory.

With eight minutes on the overtime clock, Staples came on strong and the crowd knew a win was eminent. Ben Gault ’21, made a beautiful shot that was stopped by the goalie, but Alex Goodman ’20 was fast to the rebound and knocked it in. bringing the team to victory.

“I drove it to the net and put it in for the win,” Alex Goodman ’20 said. “This was a great win for the team and from here it’s only up for Staples hockey.”

The final score of the game was Staples 2, Trinity Catholic 1.

The team looks on to their next game

The next game is Saturday, January 26 at 8:00pm at their home rink, Milford Ice Pavilion, against St. Joseph.
