DEFINITION:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the Central Nervous System which disrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body

CAUSE:

The Cause of MS is unknown but is believed to be triggered by an unidentified environmental factor to a person who is genetically predisposed. What is known is that the Auto Immune system attacks Myelin Sheatth which are seen as foreign particles - invaders.

MS can also be seen as genetically linked. To find this out there must be a scan of an entire genome of the patient's and relatives to identify small chromosomal regions linked

ANATOMY/PHYSIOLOGY:

Patches of myelin sheath dsestroyed are called Plaques

SYMPTOMS:

  • numbness
  • tremors (shaking)
  • loss of bladder/bowel contro
  • problems with vision
  • loss of muscular control
  • problems with balance

TREATMENT:

Sadly there is no known cure form MS but there are numerous drugs and non-drug therapy.
