Positively Midland updates in brief from the Midland Area Community Foundation

Better not pout, I'm telling you why.

Santa Claus is coming to town. Tonight. Your community foundation has organized the Santa House project since it was built in 1987, and yeah, we still get giddy every time we meet him. Join us at the Midland County Courthouse at 7PM. Santa will help with a countdown to turn on the lights, then a county official hands Santa a key... to his own house... which sounds weird now that we've written it out. Festivities are free and open to all ages. Bonus: hot cocoa and cookies provided. Here's a full schedule for the season. Oh yeah, and we're still looking for volunteer elves & train conductors throughout December, so email eschafer@midlandfoundation.org if you're interested in bringing a smile to children's faces this season. This message has been approved by St. Nicholas.

Students, time to get your share of $500,000.

Scholarship applications open December 1st. All Midland County high school seniors, current college students and adults going back to school are eligible. In case you forgot how much our community values education, here's your reminder that nearly 200 individual donors have established scholarship funds at the community foundation. Since 1978, that equates to a cool $5 million given out. Students, you can choose up to five and apply online from December 1st - March 1st. Adults, we could use your help as volunteers to review applications. Hooray for teamwork!

MPD gets $33k to suit up for safety.

The Midland Police Department earned a $33,894 grant to cover the cost of individual first aid kits and enhanced body armor for officers. We hope they're never used, but recognize the need to equip our public servants with the gear necessary to respond to critical incidents. "This is a stopgap... This is for use to keep people alive until it's safe for paramedics to get in," said MPD Sgt. Dan Keeler, referring to the use of on-person medical equipment during an active shooter or other critical incident response. Cheers to MPD for preparedness and the bravery to serve and protect every day.

It's Giving Tuesday. We're a fan.

With all the shopping deals to be had on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, your pocketbook may be a little lighter today. Hopefully you found the perfect gifts for the ones you love, and maybe a little something for yourself. Here's your reminder that it feels amazing to give back, too. Right now, we're adding $2 on top of every $1 you donate to the Central Park Elementary STEM School playground project. For $50, your name will be permanently added to the unique learning & play area. It's levers and pulleys and exploration and fun. Trust us, our students are going to love this place. Learn more here. Wallet a little too light? Volunteering is giving too, and we could use your help on a number of projects. 989.839.9661 or info@midlandfoundation.org for details.
