Geography/Cities

Many ancient Greeks made a living from the sea. They became fishers, sailors, and traders. Others settled in farming communities. A Greek peninsula is a body of water on three sides.

Class divisions

The Greeks were the first people to develop the idea of citizenship. Today the word applies to almost everyone in a society. However in most Greek city-states only free native-born men who owned land could be citizens. The rights of a Greek citizenship are they could pass and choose there laws and they had a right to vote and hold office and there own property and defend themselves in court.

Art

The architects Iktinos and Kallikrates and the sculptor Pheidias began work on the temple in the middle of the 5th century B.C. The Parthenon was built atop the Acropolis, a natural pedestal made of rock that was the site of the earliest settlements in Athens, and Pericles invited other people to build there as well. A few of Greek art forms are Greek architecture and Greek pottery and paintings along with a coin design that expressed Greek ideas of beauty and harmony and moderation.

Organized Government

Oligarchy's definition is a government where a few people hold all of the power. The definition of tyranny is a cruel and oppressive government or rule. Direct democracy is a form of democracy in which people decide on policy initiatives directly. Representative democracy means that people in a smaller group to make laws and governmental decisions. The advantages of oligarchy is that it is a form of government that concentrates power in the hands of an elite group rather then having only one person make a decision the disadvantages are that the rest of the citizens who have to follow laws written to benefit that small group. The advantages of tyranny are that one person would have complete control over a group of people who obey them because they are afraid. Disadvantages are that tyranny is difficult to defend on ethical grounds. A representative democracy is a form of government that allows people to elect officials, who make decisions on their behalf. The advantages and disadvantages of direct democracy are that people have control and people have more opinions and ideas and that people have less ideas to look off of.

Religion

Greeks had very important and religious beliefs. The Greeks worshiped their gods and favored them by following many rituals and by giving them gifts and in return they hoped that the Gods would grant good fortune to them. Greeks also believed that Gods and Goddesses controlled nature and shaped their lives. The Greeks also believed in an afterlife and had Greek festivals that honored the gods and goddesses. Festivals were dedicated to Zeus and were held at Olympia.

Writing Systems

The Greek alphabet has been around since the 8th century BC. Ι λοϝε αλλ κινδς οφ δεσσερτ means I love all kinds of dessert in Greek.
