Sage Advice ArtistGarden.net

Years ago, when my ambition was greater than my experience, I received sage advice from a former co-worker.

Lilacs are perfect for poolside flower beds, she said.

True enough. Our pool, located in a cleared area, surrounded by native maples and birches, with beautiful coloured leaves every fall, which fill the skimmer baskets until it chokes.

Evergreens are no better, they shed needles, lots and lots of needles.

Beside the pool, the Monge (S. vulgaris) and the Pocahontas (S. hyacinthiflora), still have their leaves in late October. About the time we shut off the pump and cover the skimmer for winter.
