Hornet Softball Preseason & Spring Break

I hope you are all doing well and have enjoyed following our team thus far! I've had a very good feeling about this group of young women since fall ball, and they keep on proving that feeling right. Not only have we had some fantastic success on the field, but more importantly, this team has become a true softball family!

Pre-season practice started off strong, as we approached our first week's 6am gym slot with enthusiasm. We focused on doing the little things right, improving our fundamentals and confidence and becoming closer as a team. We tried something new this year, adding two indoor games in the middle of February. It was refreshing to play someone other than each other! Though we left the day with two losses, we learned a lot about our team and took it into the next couple weeks of practices. Much to our surprise and joy- many of those practices were outside!

We finally got Briana and Erika back from study abroad in Costa Rica the following week, which we had been anxiously awaiting! They jumped right into practice, and brought even more positivity to the squad. We took that energy into our first outdoor games in March: two down in Franklin, Indiana and two at home (yes, really!) vs Manchester. We learned our lessons against Franklin and came back strong for two wins against Manchester! It was a photo finish for our second home game, as we won with a come-from-behind walk-off just minutes before it got too dark!

We headed into finals that next week feeling good about how much we had been able to work on the field, which was great considering the cold weather that returned. Fortunately, we didn't have to sit in that cold weather for long, as it was time for our Florida trip!

Our first day in Florida was quite chilly, but that didn't stop us from coming out hot! We began our week with two great wins against two good teams: Lake Forest and UMass Boston. We kept the momentum going the rest of the trip, finishing with the most Spring Break wins in program history! We ended up 7-3, also beating Becker, Plattsburgh St, Worcester St, D'Youville, and Hendrix. I'd call the trip a success!

A few other records were broken as well. Though they're two of the most humble players I know, I have to brag on them a bit. Congratulations to Erin for breaking the career records for hits, RBIs and strike outs, and congratulations Izzy for breaking the career steals record! The best part about it is that these two young women only care about the records if they help the team succeed- and they certainly have!

Our performance was impressive, but I am most proud of our team dynamic. We played strong teams, but it was the focus on OUR game that helped us succeed. Even in the face of adversity, this team stuck together and came back even stronger. These ladies have each others' backs, and that bond will carry us through the remainder of our season!

It has been one heck of a season so far, and we cannot wait for it to continue! We open up MIAA play this Saturday at St. Mary's at 1 & 3pm, and we're looking to come out strong. For those who have been following our progress, thank you! For anyone who would like to start now, please see our upcoming schedule below. We'd love to have you at one of our games! Thank you as always for your support- GO HORNETS!
