HERITAGE Rakhee Jain Desai

On Display April 12 to June 8, 2019

First generation South Asian Americans have had a front row seat to the strife and successes of the immigrant generation before them. By picking and choosing aspects of one’s upbringing and heritage while folding in relevant aspects of the environment, both subconscious and active choices are made. Rakhee Jain Desai’s body of work is influenced by this constant evolution. By combining the fluidity of the Batik with the weight and texture of oils, the artist pushes an Eastern art into a modern application. Using this process and the layering of images the artist has collected throughout her lifetime: memories, hopes, travels and comments she has either rejected or absorbed about being an Indian-American woman, Rakhee aims to chronicle the movement of home and identity.
