Workbox lending library!

We have begun to roll out our workbox lending library this week. Each student can receive two workboxes each week to support work-based curriculum and ULS curriculum at home. We are so excited to offer this exciting experience for our students!

You will notice that the boxes have been sealed with blue tape, this indicates that they have been completely sanitized for your safety. Each box contains printed directions and supplies for students to replicate what they would work on if they were attending school face-to-face. Examples of workboxes include: card making, wrapping silverware, sorting money, salt and pepper fill station, assembling nuts, washers and screws, envelope preparation, office sorting and folding clothes. Our goal is that your student will spend a little time each day practicing these skills with the provided workboxes as well as utilizing the practice activity sheets for home activities (making bed, doing laundry, washing dishes, etc...)each day.

The workbox library will be brought directly to your home for a porch drop off each Friday. Please leave your workboxes on the porch with all of the supplies included so that two new boxes can be dropped off.

Jardon Greenhouse

Our students are coming back to school on February 1st and I am sure they are looking forward to planting seeds for the Spring and Summer growing season. I am reaching out to our community for your help in making this happen! We need seeds! Seeds that you may have harvested from your favorite plants or even leftover seeds from last season. Fruits, flowers, veggies...we are accepting all of them! We will accept greenhouse items that you may want to donate either new or gently used (no power tools please).

We are looking forward to a bountiful season! Please send/bring seeds directly to Jardon. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all donations should be dropped off at the front door. Please call and let us know when you are bringing something.

Thank you!

Meditation with Ms. McCuiston

Hello Jardon Families! Happy New Year. This week our students practice a mindfulness meditation about self-compassion. Self-compassion is a wonderful, nurturing form of meditation that anyone can practice. Self-compassion is a tool we can use to be kinder and friendlier to ourselves when we are stressed about a situation, having a bad day, or feeling disappointed in ourselves or others. There are a variety of self-compassion exercises and tools for free online. Feel free to explore and make self-compassion a practice in your home. You’ll be grateful you did! This week we practiced a 4 minute guided self-compassion meditation.

Sharpen Your Brain With Puzzles

Did you know that brain experts agree doing a jigsaw puzzle is a great way to boost your brain power? Working on a puzzle can help improve your memory, improve your problem solving skills, improve your visual and spatial reasoning, enhance your mood, lower stress levels, and exercise both sides of your brain.

Recently, when we have a family dinner, I have been setting up a table for the family to do a puzzle. I must admit, puzzles are very challenging for me so I purchase the 300 piece puzzle over the 500 or 1,000 piece puzzles. My young adult children have enjoyed working on these puzzles together. We are usually able to complete the puzzle within an hour or so. We laugh, enjoy each other’s company and have fun creating the puzzle together. I will confess one more thing, my children do most of the puzzle, but I do try.

As the long days of winter linger on, it is important for your young adult to keep his/her mind sharp. Many of our students enjoyed working on puzzles while at school. During their caseload time students were able to select a leisure activity. Many of our students selected working on a puzzle. Teachers set up permanent puzzle tables in their rooms and students worked on the puzzle during this caseload time.

So, improve your brain power while having fun by setting up a puzzle table in your home. The long days of winter will not seem so long and your brain will receive a much needed boost.

HEALTHY LIVING PART 2

Let’s continue our discussion about Healthy Living. This week we will be focusing on physical activity/exercise!

Physical activity/exercise is a major contributor to ones healthy lifestyle. As humans we are meant to use our bodies, while disuse leads to unhealthy living; which can show up as obesity, weakness, lack of endurance and can even foster development of disease.

Regular exercise can increase muscle mass, improve balance and flexibility and improve heart health. Weight bearing exercises can help prevent osteoporosis by building bone strength.

By involving ourselves with regular physical activity/ exercise we can help increase our self esteem and also decrease stress/ anxiety, improve mood and general mental health.

A good piece of news is that exercise can be broken up into short 10 minute sessions in our busy days. Start slow to avoid injury, soreness and fatigue. Gradually increase if possible to 30-60 of moderate to vigorous activity every day.

Almost any type of exercise is helpful to people ( resistance, walking, swimming, lifting weights, yoga, bike riding, etc)

Children NEED exercise! Playing outside with friends is a great and fun way to start. On the opposite end of the spectrum, people are never too old to enjoy some regular physical activity.

PLEASE NOTE: People with certain health conditions should talk with their doctor before beginning any vigorous exercise program. For example: heart/ lung conditions, high blood pressure, people who become short of breath easily or are morbidly obese.

Next week we will conclude our healthy living discussion by focusing on mental health.

Joke of the week: Why did the phone keep walking into the wall? It lost its contacts!😂
