Common Exhibit #6 Using personal values to set short and long-term goals

FAMILY

Top Ten Core Values:

After narrowing down my top ten, I was asked to narrow it down to only five values. I discarded self-acceptance, fun, acceptance, stability, and health. It was particularly hard for me to throw away self-acceptance because I think the only way that you can accept others is if you accept yourself first and love yourself. It is important to love yourself and give yourself confidence to be happy. Stability was the easiest to throw away because after contemplating on everything I have been through, not having a stable life has enabled me to grow stronger as a person. All of my trials and tribulations caused me to come out stronger and enabled me to learn the most important lessons in life.

FRIENDSHIP

Top Five Core Values:

The five values that I decided to keep were friendship, family, loved, self-esteem, and god's will. I value friendship and family because I think it is important to have people to support you throughout your life goals and to make you have fun. I feel as if friendship and family cause you to feel loved, and feeling loved creates your self-esteem. All five of these values correlate with each other.

LOVE

Top Core Value:

The most important core value of my life was to be loved by those close to me. Feeling loved triggers happiness and is a self-esteem booster. It does not matter if you have only a few close friends or family, as long as they truly love you, it should make you feel worthy.

REFLECTION

Reflection on this activity:

Short-term goals:

1) Get at least a 3.0 GPA this semester

Action Plan: I took easier classes this semester to begin with. I have been doing study hours in the library each day for my sorority and actually studying at least a week before each test. For the last month of school I will begin studying daily for 30 minutes for each final leading up to the week before where I will spend two hours per final each day.

2) Lose five pounds by May

Action Plan: I will work out every other day for the next month and eliminate snacking and desserts. During the workouts I will do at least 30 minutes of cardio and at least 30 minutes of abs and squats. This is connected with my values self-esteem and health. I think these are very important and being healthy and losing a healthy amount of weight can boost my self-esteem.

Long-term goals:

1) Get married and have 3 children

Action Plan: Find a husband. This correlates with my values family and to be loved. I think it is important to have a family and to be loved so that people will support you and be there for you no matter what.

2) Get a well-paid job that I enjoy

Action Plan: Graduate college, get a master's degree, and find something that interests me. This goal will boost my self esteem and enable me to help support a family.
