Words From The Chair

Kernesa Samana / 2020 THE Ohio WiNUP Chapter Chair

Like a lot of you out there, I am a huge Brene Brown fan. My first Brene Brown experience was listening to “The Power of Vulnerability” on audible (back when I used to drive to work). Her work focuses on courage, vulnerability and shame. Her message really hit home with me, because all my life I have built up an armor. Growing up in a small predominately white town in Ohio, as a bi-racial child, I always felt like I didn’t belong. Always being on the outside, it was easier to not let people in, then to let them in and be hurt. Even as I went into college and started working, I continued with the same patterns. As a minority woman in the male dominated field of technology, I always needed to prove myself, I didn’t have time to let them see me sweat, right?

Several years ago, someone shared a venn diagram with me, that showed success to be the overlap of technical knowledge, political savvy and social capital. For my entire life I had been focused on the technical knowledge - being the best at what I did. Once I realized I needed to make authentic connections to really be successful - that’s when I realized I needed to have the courage to be vulnerable. Brene teaches “Authenticity is a collection of choices we have to make every day. It’s about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” Now I work to be vulnerable, to be my authentic self and to own up to my mistakes. I’m not there yet - but I am continuing to grow and evolve.

In this time when we are talking about social justice and sharing our stories, it’s more important than ever to be your authentic self. Let’s all agree to be courageous enough to share our stories, but know that our story isn’t the only story. And while we are listening to others stories, remember the following words from Brene Brown: “I’m not here to be right, I’m here to get it right”.

This month’s song was recommended by Deb Hohn- Together by Norman. Let’s continue on this journey together - we can get it right…together!

If you have a song that moves you - send it to me, I may include it in a future newsletter!

Basic Statistics and Their Uses During the Pandemic

June 24, 2020

On June 24th, the STEM committee held their (first!) virtual lunch-and-learn via WebEx, for WiNUP and non-WiNUP members alike. Even with the "new normal", we do not want to stop networking and learning. Teri Berliner presented on the use of Statistics and how they play a role in modeling, analyzing and predictions relating to the current pandemic. If you know of parents, teachers or students who would be interested in participating in future virtual events, please reach out to Heidi DeBenedictis or Megan Clary. The next event is planned for Fall 2020.

How Does Power Get To My House?

July 15, 2020

The Ohio STEM Committee had a successful, second virtual event held on July 15th. Our guest speaker, Jonathan Melton – AEP Transmission Operations Training & Development Engineer, provided insight into all of the behind the scenes efforts and considerations that go into keeping your lights on! He showed the journey of power, beginning at generation, through transmission and distribution to the end destination of our homes. Jonathan also discussed decisions that the men and women working in the 24/7 operations centers make every day to provide safe and reliable power as well as the many groups involved in that great task.

We would like to thank those of you who joined us for this event. We would LOVE to see more of you join us for future STEM events!

Journey To Leadership

July 16, 2020

Matt Satterwhite

Journey to Leadership Event in July was a huge success! This event was one of the largest, if not the largest, with 138 attendees. Commissioner Trombold and others from the PUCO shared their personal stories of success and advice they would have given themselves at the start of their career. Stories of several different paths to the current were shared showing that successful paths in careers are all different and involve forward, backward and lateral moves.

Virgin Pulse's "Virtual Exercise Dice"

Do you want to add some fun to your daily home exercise routine, the start of a conference call or a virtual meeting with a co-worker? Then, check out this site, recommended by AEP Sharecare: Virgin Pulse's "Virtual Exercise Dice"- every time you click the dice, it rolls a different home exercise like "10 push-ups" or "20 air squats". It’s a great way to kick off meetings and keep you and your meeting attendees positive, active and engaged. See link below!

Unapologetic Boldness for Life & Career Success

2021 Officer Election Announcement

The Ohio chapters announces the following timeline for the election of the 2021 officers.

The open positions are: Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer & International Board Rep. The elections committee accepts applications from qualified members through JULY 31st!! Don't forget to get your applications in! Only a FEW DAYS left!

Good at Planning Events?

The programming chairwomen seek 3-4 passionate, organized and willing members who enjoy various aspects of event planning to be on their committee.

If you haven't had the opportunity to work with Brittany Noland or Jacquie Weyers, then this is a great chance. They are the ideal chairwomen for this committee as they understand the mission of WiNUP and bring that to our local level. Whether you can plan events in your sleep, or would like to develop these skills, you are welcome to join. Assist with as many of the upcoming events as your schedule allows. Contact Brittany Noland or Jacquie Weyers to get involved.
