Methodology & Technology

During the observations I expected the teacher to incorporate technology into more than half of her lesson plans. Unfortunately, I learned that she was not able to use technology in barely any of her lessons. The computers in the room needed repairing, and more resources.

Methodology & Technology

Since the Detention Center did not have the appropriate resources available for the students, it allowed me to think of ways to make lessons to create future lessons without the need for technology. In my future classroom, if I am not able to access a computer lab, I'll bring in recipe books, cooking magazines, or individual recipes for students to search for ideas instead of looking them up on the computer.

Technology & Methodology

I was very surprised that the kids in the classroom were not able to access technology at all, in today's era. Under the circumstances it is understandable, but that doesn't take away from the aspect of the children not being able to fully get the most out of their education.

Technology & Methodology

For the observations I stayed at the same sight, and each time there was no incorporation of technology for the students. I think that the teacher did a great job with the approach she had on the no use of technology. She did her best to print out the activities for the students to have, and also incorporate different hands on activities so it wasn't just book work.

Technology & Methodology:

I will take away from this component how to manage and incorporate other things into lessons that will still be engaging for the class. This will make me a better educator, because it will allow my students to be introduced to other resources than the technology used in most classrooms. It will also challenge me as a teacher to come up with different variations to future lesson plans.

Professionalism

I expected that both the teacher and those who worked for the detention center would be dressed in business casual. The teacher was always in this attire but most of the people working there wore sweatpants/athletic gear.

Professionalism

At first I did not think it was professional for those working at the school not to be dressed in business casual. When I saw that they also lead the students in gym class, it made sense to me why they were in comfortable/moveable clothing. In my future I plan on dressing professionally and also casually when allowed.

Professionalism

I was most surprised with the teachers ability to teach lessons to touch on the many different ages of students in the classroom. Mrs. K taught lessons that weren't too ahead of younger students to behind for the older students in the class. I was shocked to learn that the 13 year olds would participate in the same lessons as 17 year olds. Under the circumstances, Mrs. K did a really good job.

Professionalism

Mrs. K's approach to the different age groups was to allow those much farther ahead of the rest of the class work in their own areas. This allowed for students to be on top of the classes they were taking in high school so they would stay on track with graduation. Mrs. K had all of the students working on their own math levels at their seats, and helped when needed.

Professionalism

I'll take away how each student was treated by the teacher. Mrs. K treated each of her students with the same respect as the rest of the people in the classroom, including the volunteers and her co-workers. She did not let race, gender, or ranking determine how she talked to anyone. I think as a future teacher that was a good example on how to keep relationships professional, but also personable.

Understanding Learners

For this component I really thought the teacher would have a hard time keeping up with drastic differences in each of the student's separate education. To my surprise she did a great job incorporating lessons that would fit each of the student's education. The classes teacher worked well with her given resources to provide thought-provoking/engaging lessons with her classroom.

Understanding Learners

These observations showed me how as a future teacher to be flexible and ready to handle things that come up. If students were pulled from class it showed me how to think on my feet, without disturbing the class. I think seeing the diversity of this classroom helped give future examples of what I could do when I run into a situation in my classroom.

Understanding Learners

I was surprised to see how well the teacher incorporated lessons that related to the students lives. The books that she read related to events that her classroom could relate to, making it seem that she very much understood her students.

Understanding Learners

Mrs. K's approach to creating different lesson plays to relate to those of different types of multiple intelligences seemed to work best with her class. For example some days they touched heavy on those strong in art/linguistic skills and the next day was good for those who are interpersonal. She made sure the lessons providing variation for the different learning styles in her classroom.

Understanding Learners

One thing that I will take away from this is how to incorporate different types of lessons for the different types of learners. The teacher knew what each student was strong on, and touched on those abilities for the students. As a future teacher this gives me an idea to do a survey to learn what kinds of learners I have in my classroom, and how to best teach with knowing this knowledge.

Management of Physical Classroom

I expected that the teacher was clean and organized, including her desk and personal area so she could preform at her highest level. The teacher exceeded my expectations and was very organized. The front desk was neat, and papers were stacked in an orderly manner. She always knew where things were in her classroom and didn't waste time looking for materials needed for her lessons.

Management of Physical Classroom

My observations changed my opinion on how I prefer students desks to be arranged. In this classroom it was single file lines, all separated facing towards the teacher. I think this best fits for this class, but I don't think it allows for communication to be made from student to student. I will address this in my future classroom by grouping desks, so students will be able to communicate their thoughts and get ideas from one another.

Management of Physical Classroom

I was really most surprised with how distracting the people working in the classroom were to the class. I understand they were required to be in the room but didn't understand why they didn't refrain from having their personal conversations until after the students were done silently reading. I was also surprised that Mrs. K never asked them to quiet down. Even though the students were in juvie, didn't mean they don't deserve to still have the same school environment as anyone else their age.

Management of Physical Classroom

Since Mrs. K didn't have to have policies for late work or tardies, these observations made me think of what I will do in these situations. I took away the most how to seat students, to allow for better academic purposes. I also was able to think of rule classroom in the future.

Diversity & Demographics

For this component I actually wasn't very sure what to expect when going into this setting of a school. I thought that the students weren't going to want to learn and act as if they didn't care about school. I was very wrong about that, most of the students didn't want to fall behind in school once they were released. I was able to work one on one with a student on math, and she told me she was graduating this year and had plans to enroll at her local community college. This was completely different than my expectations.

Diversity & Demographics

I went to a high school that was extremely diverse, so the observations didn't show me something that I was not used to. It confirmed that in my future classroom, I will have a variety of different students. I will address this by treating each student with the same respect as the rest of their peers.

Diversity & Demographics

The teachers efficacy surprised me the most. She was very actively involved with each of her students and constantly was encouraging them to think outside of the box and gain knowledge. Mrs. K would set goals and deadlines that were reachable but also pushed her students to meet her requirements. She would also tell the repercussions to students if they were slacking off and not doing their work.

Diversity & Demographics

For the most part, the components of this lesson were treated the same. Although the room was very diverse, students came from different areas, age groups, and backgrounds. Mrs. K handled the same approach to all of her students. I think her approach of treated each student equally was the best and most effective, for her classroom and for my own future class.

Diversity & Demographics

One thing that I took away from this was to always encourage students and not allow their differences to separate them from the rest of the class. As a teacher it is important to be unbias and not show special treatment to students. It is also important to put yourself in your students shoes, so you can better understand what it is that they are going through.
