Two bond projects were proposed. ZCS Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Mike Shafer, and ZCS Chief Operations Officer, Mrs. Becky Coffman and Mr. Victor Landfair, Skillman Corporation explained the proposed projects.
Two Proposed Bond Projects
The 2018 A General Obligation Bond Project
The 2018 A General Obligation Bond Project for the HVAC renovation for Secondary Schools including Zionsville High School, Zionsville Middle School and Zionsville West Middle School was the first order of business. This project impacts a total of 1,056,080 square feet of school spaces and includes equipment such as chillers, cooling towers, temperature controls and air handlers. Upgrading this equipment will result in operational savings and increased environmental control of our campuses.
The 2018 B General Obligation Bond Project
The 2018 B General Obligation Bond Project is a renovation/upgrade of the HVAC system in the elementary schools including Pleasant View Elementary, Union Elementary, Boone Meadow Elementary and Stonegate Elementary. This project impacts 518,248 square feet of school space and is consistent with the strategy utilized by the 2017 bond projects. Some of the equipment proposed for replacement in this project is approaching 36 years old.
Once permission to request bids is approved and a bid is awarded, project renovations will begin June 1, 2018 and be scheduled for completion by August 1, 2019.
Board of Finance
The Board of Finance Meeting opened immediately following the public hearing. Mr. Mike Shafer, ZCS Chief Financial Officer, gave the required financial report to the board.
The Regular Board Meeting
The regular board meeting opened with routine business followed by the Superintendent’s Report. Mrs. Lynn Kissel, Residency Specialist and community development liaison, introduced Mrs. Roesch, the faculty leader of a new Braille club at Eagle Elementary School.
She invited Mrs. Roesch and club members to talk about and demonstrate what students are learning by participating in the Braille Club.
As part of our Strong in Every Way (SIEW) intiative, Zionsville Community Schools is committed to embracing ways to foster growth in all areas of youth development. Managing the Braille Club takes a lot of patience and one-on-one instruction with students. The reward is seeing students work together on a valuable life skill that will help them communicate with all peers despite barriers. Braille at Eagle Elementary has been widely and well received. Several teachers are attending the optional gatherings with their students.
Board Policies Approved
Dr. Robison detailed various board policy updates that were approved following a second reading.

Board officers were elected for another term. Mrs. Jane Burgess was re-elected as board president. Mr. Joe Stein will continue as board vice president, and Mrs. Debbie Ungar will serve as board secretary.
