UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Contest- Guidelines for all Band students

Students in first, second, and fourth period classes are beginning preparations for UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Contest. This process is an important part of our curriculum for the year. Of course this year looks a little different with a blend of in-person and at-home learners. The HEB ISD Return-to-Learn plan is very clear that virtual students MAY attend in-person to participate with UIL Activities such as Band. All students who would like to participate in person are welcome and encouraged to do so. We understand, however, that some families may not want their children participating with any in-person activities. Here are the guidelines for ALL Band students in a UIL performing class:

  • All students will have one weekly sectional before or after school for their Band class. All students, regardless of virtual or in-person status, are expected to be present for their sectional. (Virtual attendees will use their Google Meet class code to access).
  • Each class will have an assignment for the week, taken from the music, that the sectional is designed to assess. Students attending the sectional in-person will have their assignment assessed during the sectional. Students attending virtually will need to submit a recording of the week's assigned material for assessment. Recordings will be assessed using the Music Performance Standards rubric.
  • Content may be re-assigned if it is not performed at a level that indicates proficiency.
  • Important Dates: Pre-UIL Performance will take place the evening of Thursday, March 11 and the UIL Concert porition will be recorded Friday, March 26. Exact times for these dates is TBA, but plan for 5-8:30 pm.
  • Students who are not participating in the March 11 and March 26 performances will have alternative assignments for both, but will participate in all of the preparation and music learning along the way, including the weekly sectionals and recording assignments.

We hope this information is helpful. Please reach out to your student's Band Director if you have questions or need further clarification.
