Overbooking On United Airlines "There is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice."

United Airlines recently encountered a sudden uproar and backlash after an incident involving an overbooked airplane. Doctor David Dao was forcibly removed from the aircraft after refusing to give up his seat. United asked for any volunteers to give up their seats. After no one volunteered, United decided to take a more selective approach. They asked Dr. Dao politely to give up his seat on the plane. Dao refused politely at first, but as the atmosphere grew more tense, with the airline asking him several more times to leave his seat, Dao began to respond in an aggressive fashion, shouting and claiming that he had been selected due to the fact that he was Chinese.

"The political liberty of the subject is a tranquility of mind, arising from the opinion each person has of safety. In order to have this liberty, it is requisite to government be so constituted as one man need not be afraid of another."

After these events took place, the police became involved with the case. Doctor Dao was then beaten viciously and dragged off of the plane. Baron Von Montesquieu believed that there are unspoken laws; laws of basic human decency that are oftentimes ignored by the official laws put in power. A man be beaten so violently and dragged off of the plane with his stomach showing from under his shirt goes against anything Montesquieu would have stood for, including basic human rights for everyone, regardless of their race or gender.

"The tyranny of a prince in an oligarchy is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy."

Montesquieu believed that people of a community formed a stronger power than any sort of random man chosen by the community itself. He also believed that there were may ways to corrupt a set government, but the only thing that can corrupt humanity is thoughtlessness and apathy towards others. While many people recorded the beatings of Dao and posted it on social media, not one person offered to give up their seat instead, or stand up for him at all.

"To become truly great, one has to stand with people, not above them."

What Montesquieu would find truly irksome is that people oftentimes forget that humankind is all one collective species. We are one race. People alienate themselves from others in order to make themselves feel like they are worth more. Doctor Dao was a man on the airline who needed to get back home to his patients and work. Though it has been brought to many people's attention, the fact that Doctor Dao was linked to a few legal offenses years prior is completely irrelevant to the violation of his basic human rights. He may have done questionable things for dishonourable means, it does not make him any less human than every other person on that plane.
