PROJECT OVERVIEW: Mayor Eric Garcetti, with support from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles, committed the City of L.A. to the Sustainable Development Goals in 2017 to demonstrate how localization is key to achieving the Goals, and how the framework can provide a common language for the development challenges that face our world. In 2019, the Mayor’s Office presented the City’s first Voluntary Local Review, complemented by an online, open SDG data reporting platform (https://sdgdata.lamayor.org/). L.A. is one of the first cities in the world to uphold a commitment to transparency, publish its data online, and share core progress and ongoing challenges in reaching global targets for gender equity, homelessness, housing, climate action, education, economic growth, and more. The SDG Data Reporting Platform relies solely on open source technology and is hosted on a GitHub repository that can be forked by other cities and organizations wanting to openly report their SDG progress at the indicator level.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: The SDG Data Reporting Platform allows the community to access and download key city data related to the SDGs. So far, key community engagement has been centered on university students in the City of Los Angeles. In the past year and a half, the project team has hosted over 25 student interns and fellows in partnership with four local universities.
PARTNERS: Funding for the project is provided by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation through the Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles. Four key academic partners (University of Southern California, Occidental College, Arizona State University, and University of California Los Angeles) have provided the project with student interns, public meetings and workshops, and expert advice.
