THE HORRORS OF THE MEATPACKING INDUSTRY IN THE PROGRESSIVE ERA created by // REZA SHAMSHAD

MEATPACKING FACTORIES DURING THE PROGRESSIVE ERA HOUSED SOME OF THE WORST CASES OF WORKER MISTREATMENT, UNSANITARY FOOD MANAGEMENT, AND NO REGARD FOR THE WELFARE OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

THE WORST WORKING CONDITIONS

"Workers lacked a sense of the overall slaughtering process, and managers turned this to their advantage by speeding up each stage of the process" - Gary Wiener
WORKING CONDITIONS PRESENT IN THE FACTORY

HORRIFIC FOOD MANAGEMENT

"diseased animals are rendered into meat, spoiled meat is mixed with good, the corpses and feces of rats are ground into sausages, and rancid meat is disguised with chemical treatments—all to be sold for public consumption" - Thomas Riggs
FOOD MANAGEMENT WITHIN THE FACTORY

NO REGARD FOR AMERICAN WELFARE

"Tapeworms are segmented, ribbon-like worms that can grow to between 4.5 and 9 meters in length and live in your intestines. We can catch them by swallowing food containing traces of contaminated feces, or by eating raw contaminated pork, beef or fish. There may be no symptoms, or stomach pains accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting. Left untreated, complications can be more serious." -Jon Henley
CARTOONS AND ILLNESSES FROM EATING SPOILED MEAT

Although the events that took place at these meatpacking factories were anything but good. If none of these things had ever occurred in these factories our food wouldn't be nearly as safe as it is today. Because once these terrible factory practices were exposed, the Food and Drug Administration was formed to combat all this from then on.
