Sage saw special marks on Buddha's body, said he would be either world ruler or world teacher.

Grew up in luxury, confined to royal compound. Educated and married young.

Disobeyed father's orders & left compound

Saw 4 Passing Sights- an old man, a sick man, a corpse, a sannyasin (wandering holy man)

Led him to question meaning of human existence. Renounced his wealth & went into world. Called the Great Going Forth.

Wanted to purify himself spiritually. Lived on as little food, drink, and sleep as possible.

Collapsed from weakness and decided to reject asceticism. Adopted moderation.

Decided to meditate under Bodhi Tree until he had the understanding he needed to resist temptation.

Reached a state of profound understanding called his awakening.
