God Speaks A Bible Study

God speaks. He has spoken to men and women since the beginning of creation. And he still speaks. Let's take a closer look at what the Bible says about our communicating God.

Read Genesis 1 - What method does God use to create the universe and everything in it?

Genesis 1 refers to God "speaking" or "calling" 15 times!
GENESIS 3:8-9 - THEN THE MAN AND HIS WIFE HEARD THE SOUND OF THE LORD GOD AS HE WAS WALKING IN THE GARDEN IN THE COOL OF THE DAY, AND THEY HID FROM THE LORD GOD AMONG THE TREES OF THE GARDEN. 9 BUT THE LORD GOD CALLED TO THE MAN, "WHERE ARE YOU?" (NIV)

From this passage, does it seem like God often walked and talked with Adam and Eve in the garden?

In light of what Adam and Eve just did (read Gen. 3:1-7), describe God's voice. What would be the tone of his voice?

God speaks on the large scale (speaking the universe into being) and on the small, personal scale (speaking to individuals). Personal communication is so important to God that He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth to speak His words to us. The revelation of the Father did not remain on a page, but it became a person, Jesus Christ (John 1:14).
John 1:14-18 - The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. JOHN TESTIFIES CONCERNING HIM. HE CRIES OUT, SAYING, "THIS WAS HE OF WHOM I SAID, ‘HE WHO COMES AFTER ME HAS SURPASSED ME BECAUSE HE WAS BEFORE ME.’ ” FROM THE FULLNESS OF HIS GRACE WE HAVE ALL RECEIVED ONE BLESSING AFTER ANOTHER. FOR THE LAW WAS GIVEN THROUGH MOSES; GRACE AND TRUTH CAME THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN GOD, BUT GOD THE ONE AND ONLY, WHO IS AT THE FATHER’S SIDE, HAS MADE HIM KNOWN.(NIV)

From this passage above, describe what Jesus' voice would sound like.

God still speaks!

John 14:25-27 - All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (NIV)

If the Holy Spirit will be teaching you all things and reminding you of everything Jesus has said, how often will he be talking to you? How often do you listen to him?

1. When is the last time you have heard God's voice? Is it a regular occurrence?

2. Do you hear God on details of your life? Or do you only desire to hear His voice on the "big" issues in life?

3. Take a moment and ask God what He thinks about you. Listen and write down the words that come to you.
