Meiosis 1 Prophase 1

Homologous chromosomes condense, pair up, and swap segments. spindle microtubules attach to them as the nuclear envelope breaks up.

Meiosis 1 Metaphase 1

Homologous chromosome pairs are aligned between spindle poles. Spindle microtubules attach the two chromosomes of each pair to opposite spindle poles.

Meiosis 1 Anaphase 1

All of the homologous chromosomes separate and begin heading toward the spindle poles.

Meiosis 1 Telophase 1

A complete set of chromosomes clusters at both ends of the cell. A nuclear envelope forms around each set, so two haploid nuclei form.

Meiosis 1 Prophase 2

The chromosomes condense. Spindle microtubules attach to the each sister chromotid as the nuclear envelope breaks up.

Meiosis 1 Metaphase 2

The (still duplicated) chromosomes are aligned midway between spindle poles.

Meiosis 1 Anaphase 2

Sister chromatids separate. The now unduplicated chromosomes head to the spindle poles.

Meiosis 1 Telophase 2

A complete set of chromosomes clusters at both ends of the cell. A new nuclear envelope forms around each set, so four haploid nuclei form.
