History of LegalShield
July 11, 1969, Harland Stonecipher was involved in a collision which resulted in serious legal fees. He had auto insurance to cover the damages in his car, medical insurance to cover the cost of his hospitalization and even life insurance had the accident been fatal. But he had no coverage or protection for the legal bills that accumulated. He began researching the industry of European legal expense plans, and thus began the history of LegalShield.
"I was astounded that in America you could live your whole life as a hardworking, law abiding citizen and still wind up as a defendant in a court or the target of a legal shakedown that overnight could destroy your finances and even jeopardize your personal freedom" - Harland Stonecipher, Company Founder
The first Pre-Paid Legal membership is sold in 1973. The cost is $36.

Pre-Paid Legal began using "network marketing" (multi-level marketing or MLM) in 1983. Pre-Paid Legal went public on the NASDAQ National Market System in 1984. In 1997, Pre-Paid Legal bought the People's Network (TPN), a satellite television network dedicated to personal development. Two years later, the company moved to the American Stock Exchange and then on May 13, 1999, Pre-Paid Legal was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

On September 10, 2011, the company announced that it would change its name to LegalShield. The new corporate name for the 40-year-old company was said by the company to be part of an overall re-branding initiative following the acquisition of Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. by MidOcean Partners.
